Bishop Fenwick coach David Woods has experienced the high of winning a Super Bowl championship in his time on the sidelines in Peabody. But not even those wins brought as much excitement as what happened in Braintree on Friday.Quarterback Bret Kidik threw six touchdown passes as the Crusaders claimed a 44-40 win over Archbishop Williams in their Catholic Central League/Large opener.”That was the most exciting game I’ve ever been a part of,” Woods said. “I told the kids after the game that we’ve won Super Bowls here and that was the most fun I’ve had in a game.”On the night, Kidik completed 24-of-43 for a school record 389 yards and six touchdowns. Jake Bugler caught seven passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns.”I think he broke some records (Friday),” joked Woods about his quarterback. “This game was just unbelievable.”Fenwick (3-4, 1-0 CCL Large) led 8-7 after one quarter but found itself down 26-22 at halftime thanks to a pair of touchdown passes from Williams QB Kevin Fitzpatrick and an interception return for a score.Kidik hit Bill Klemczuk and Bugler for touchdowns to make it 36-26 before Williams cut the lead to 36-32 after three quarters. A 62-yard pass to Tyler Thomann made it 44-32 in the fourth quarter.”That game really was a lot of fun,” Woods said.”St. John’s 24, Somerville 0At Dilboy Stadium in Somerville, Tyler Coppola ran for 185 yards and a score while quarterback Tommy Gaudet had three TD runs to pace the 4-3 Eagles to a win despite fumbling nine times.”It was ugly, no doubt,” Prep coach Jim O’Leary said. “But our defense played just outstanding.”Gloucester 42, Peabody 0At Newell Stadium in Gloucester, the Fishermen (6-0, 1-0 NEC North) put together perhaps their best game of the season, outgaining the Tanners by almost 400 yards and holding Peabody to just two first downs.Fullback Jordan Shairs continued to have a stellar season as he found the end zone three times. It was a scoreless game after a quarter before Gloucester struck three times late in the second period to assume control.Beverly 27, Winthrop 6At Miller Field in Winthrop, Brendan Flaherty scored a pair of touchdowns as the Panthers (2-5, 1-0 NEC South) opened conference play with a big road win.Flaherty scored once in the first and second quarters sandwiched around a Joe Wioncek touchdown to give Beverly a 21-0 lead. Winthrop’s Jimmy Barker threw a touchdown pass to James Doherty late in the half to cut the lead to 21-6.Nick Theriault closed the scoring for Beverly with a two-yard run in the fourth quarter.FIELD HOCKEYMarblehead 2, Salem 0At Salem, Julia Burke and Caroline McCarthy had first half goals while Carly McIver stopped all 10 shots she faces to move the Magicians to 12-1-2 for the season.Swampscott 2, Everett 0At Phillips Park in Swampscott, Tori Thistle had both Big Blue (7-5-3) goals and Taylor Maccario added an assist to help push the victors to within a point of qualifying for the state tournament.Danvers 2, Peabody 0At Peabody, Seth Kamens and Sarah Potter had the goals as the Falcons (9-6-2) locked up a tournament berth with the shutout win.Saugus 1, Gloucester 0At Newell Stadium in Gloucester, Jackie Doherty’s goal late in the first half was the only damage as the Sachems (11-2-2) got a big road win.VOLLEYBALLPeabody 3, Wilmington 0At Wilmington, the Tanners (11-5) got six kills from Caroline Scacchi and 13 service points from Jillian Rizzo.
