Soccer: St. Mary’s girls win, knock English out of tourney contention

The St. Mary’s girls soccer team got a little bit of revenge on Lynn English Friday at Manning Field and with it knocked the Bulldogs out of state tournament contention.Maggie Carey scored twice while Angela Dandreo and Bailey Bruckmann teamed to pitch a 2-0 shutout.”I thought that we controlled play and had our chances, but English plays hard,” St. Mary’s coach Jim Foley said.The Bulldogs (6-10-1) had beaten St. Mary’s, 2-1, earlier this season to win the Lynn City Championship, but came away snakebitten on Friday.”We played good,” English coach Ed McNeil said. “We had one flurry when it was 1-0 and I can’t believe we didn’t score.”Fenwick 2, Matignon 0At Matignon, Lauren Toye-O’Donnell had a goal and an assist on Rose Fantozzi’s tally as the Crusaders (12-2-2, 8-1 CCL Large) continued their fine play.Becca Graves pitched the shutout in goal for Fenwick, who takes on Arlington Catholic Wednesday.Salem 2, Swampscott 0At Bertram Field, the Witches (8-4-2, 5-4-1 NEC) clinched a tournament berth as Desiree DeLeon and Alix Bryant scored three minutes apart late in the first half. Emma Titus recorded her fifth shutout of the season.Peabody 4, Arl. Cath. 1At Arlington, the Tanners (13-1-1) bounced back from a loss to Danvers as Hayley Dowd scored twice while Victoria DiGiacomo and Emily Manoogian also had goals. Angela Ellison and Katie Brunelle each had an assist.Caitlin Lodi and Brienna Griffin split the win in net.BOYS SOCCERSwampscott 5, Winthrop 1At Swampscott, Nadav Zafrani had two goals while Adnan Dzino, Niclas Dieser and Chris Mason also scored as the Big Blue (4-7-2) blew the game open in the second half.Peabody 2, Billerica 0At Peabody, Luke Finkelstein and Colin Mahoney both had a goal and an assist as Peabody (10-1-2) scored twice with a strong wind in the first half to knock off the visitors.Patrick Ryan posted his fifth shutout.Saugus 6, Pope John 2At Saugus, six different Sachems (5-9-1) recorded goals as Alex Ong had a goal and an assist. Ryan Hartigan; Andre Ipajuca; Derek Codaire; R.J. Glassett and Julio Chiquillo also had goals for Saugus.Revere 2, O’Bryant 0At Revere, Alfonso Rosales and Brenny Guzman each had a goal while back-up netminder Nadir Kaddioui had the shutout in net.Fenwick 3, Beverly 1At Donaldson Field in Peabody, Doug Garabedian, Kevin Emmett and Bryon Blaisdell scored second half goals as the Crusaders (8-5-1) clinched a tournament berth after trailing 1-0 at the break.
