Soccer: St. Mary’s girls clinch tourney berth

The St. Mary’s girls soccer team was scuffling a couple of weeks ago when it sat at 5-6-2 and in serious danger of missing out on the Division 3 North tournament.The Spartans, however, went back to basics and were able to lock up a tournament spot on Monday via a 2-0 win over Austin Prep.”We were struggling a little bit after the Matignon game,” St. Mary’s coach Jim Foley said. “But we’ve started playing well and the defense has been great the last four games.”Maggie Carey took care of the offense for the Spartans (9-6-2) on Monday, scoring once in each half. Goalkeepers Angela Dandreo and Bailey Bruckmann split the shutout in goal as St. Mary’s has surrendered only one goal in its win streak.Peabody 5, Beverly 3At Beverly, the Tanners (14-1-1, 11-1 NEC North) got a scare from a Beverly team that was playing for its tourney life. Hayley Dowd had a pair of goals and an assist to up her totals to 25 goals and eight assists for the season.Emily Manoogian turned in a hat trick and Victoria Digiacomo added an assist.”Full credit to Beverly. They played right to the end and gave us all we could handle,” Peabody coach Dennis Desroches said. “It was an awesome game to be a part of.”The backline of Bianca Muscato, Angela Ellison and Katie Brunelle also played well for the Tanners.Chelsea 2, Tech 1At Chelsea Memorial Stadium, freshman Gloria Berrera had the Tiger (1-11-2) goal, assisted by Arthina Robert.Gloucester 6, English 0At Newell Stadium in Gloucester, the Bulldogs (6-11-1) ran into a buzzsaw as the Fishermen jumped to a 4-0 lead at halftime on senior night and never looked back.Lindsay and Rachel Roy both played well for English, who takes on Classical on Thursday.Georgetown 3, Lynnfield 2At Lynnfield, the visitors led 1-0 at halftime before Lynnfield (10-4-2) fought back with second half goals from Lauren McCarthy and Tori Copelas to draw back even. Georgetown, however, got the winner with only four minutes remaining.BOYS SOCCERFenwick 4, Marian 2At Donaldson Field in Peabody, Doug Garabedian had a pair of tallies while Chris Poirier and Angelo Maida each scored once as the Crusaders (9-5-1) remained red hot.Brian Blaisdell and Ian White each had an assist with keeper Greg Enos making seven saves.
