REVERE – The Revere football squad has had its work cut out for itself in the past two weeks, facing the top two clubs of the Northeastern Conference Large. Just one week after falling to Classical in a close affair, the Patriots played very well in a 42-18 setback to Gloucester last night at Della Russo Stadium.Gloucester42Revere18 Gloucester capitalized on Revere’s first possession, when safety Brandon Cusumano picked off quarterback Paul Norton on the Patriots’ third play, giving the Fishermen (4-0, 9-0) the ball at Revere’s 40. Halfback Gilbert Brown (11-100) gave the team a first down at Revere’s 24 with a 16-yard carry. After another Brown run, quarterback Joseph Avila hit teammate Michael Tomaino for a nine-yard screen to the 5. Brown scored on the next play with his five-yard run to put the Fishermen ahead, 7-0, less than four minutes in.The Patriots (0-4, 3-6) went three-and-out on their following drive, and Gloucester soon doubled its lead midway through the opening stanza. Avila (3-3-0-40) teamed with Cusumano for 13 yards to the Revere 20. After a short run, Avila connected once again with Tomaino for a 19-yard score, where the receiver snuck behind double coverage to get the pass. The Patriots allowed a late touchdown in the waning moments of the quarter, when halfback Jordan Shairs (9-85) collected the first of his four scores on a ten-yard carry for a 21-0 edge.Yet Revere, after getting the ball on the kickoff, put together a solid 15-play drive, which encompassed a good portion of the second period. Norton hit receiver Jay Hittinger on the last play of the opening quarter to give the team its initial first down at its 31. A five-yard penalty put the team into Fishermen real estate for the first time midway through the second. Revere’s Trae Weathers (22-119) converted a fourth-and-1 from Gloucester’s 45 to the 40 on a sweep to the left side. The Patriots got on the scoreboard with just over three minutes remaining on a six-yard run by halfback Quintin Wesley to get to within 21-6.However, a 47-yard return by Shairs on the following kickoff gave Gloucester solid field position at Revere’s 33. Shairs notched his second touchdown right before halftime on a one-yard carry for a 28-6 edge.”The big thing was that we were giving them good field position, as they started drives five times inside our 40,” said Revere coach Lou Cicatelli. “Our defense was able to settle down, but our offense is our best defense, and if we’re scoring points, then we can keep our defense off the field.”Revere got a boost when Avila was sacked and fumbled the ball away on the first play of the second half; lineman Oscar DesJardins made the recovery at Gloucester’s 37. On fourth-and-4 from the 31, Weathers broke through the Fisherman line before being brought down at the 11. Wesley scored three plays later from the 1 to bring the Patriots to within 28-12.”That was a huge play,” said Cicatelli of the fumble recovery, which started the drive. “We had to get a good start to the half, which that gave us.”Shairs added touchdowns in both the third and fourth, before Weathers closed out the scoring from the 1 with two minutes to go.”Revere is a good physical team,” Gloucester coach Paul Ingram said. “We had good games from Jordan (Shairs) and Gilbert (Brown).”
