November 8, 2010 by Arthur McManus

LYNN – Height is usually a physical attribute best used in basketball. But Sunday, at Manning Field, Newton North parlayed its height into a 1-0 Division 1 North preliminary-round victory over Lynn English.Newton No.1English0 Not was North big, but it was a pretty slick passing outfit. Newton controlled the game’s tempo with its slick passing that posed problems for the Bulldogs all night. The weather didn’t make things any easier for the Dogs. Most of the game was played in a steady sleet. The weather conditions contributed to the only goal scored in the game. In the 18th minute, Newton was fouled at midfield right near the sideline. Junior midfielder Luke Westman kicked the ball towards the English goal. The English defenders set their defense at the top of the area. The ball went over the heads of both teams hit the sleet covered turf and skipped past Bulldog keeper Kerlay Der and went into the net.The remainder of the game was played in English’s defensive end as Newton North controlled most of the play. After the game Coach Kerry King congratulated the Newton team and said “our kids gave it everything they had. They came up against a much bigger team ad we had trouble with their size.”
