Ipswich bests St. Mary’s girls in shootout

LYNN – Sunday was the day for shootouts at Manning Field. No sooner did the Classical boys trudge off the tarmac at Manning Field with a 1-0 loss in penalty kicks, the St. Mary’s girls followed suit. They fell to Ipswich in the preliminary round of the Division 3 North tournament, again, 1-0 in penalty kicks.Ipswich1St. Mary’s0 Unlike the Classical game, which featured spectacular goal keeping by the Rams’ Dammy Dada, this one was played between the areas with little work done by either keeper, Hannah O’Flynn or Ipswich and the tandem of Angela Dandreo in the first half and Bailey Bruckmann in the second and overtimes for the Spartans. Both teams had some chances but the best was St. Mary’s Carol DiMaiti, the freshman striker, who was sent in alone from 29 yards out only to have the shot go wide right. After the prescribed five shooters in the penalty kick phase were through, the teams were still tied, as two each scored goals. The sixth shooter for Ipswich hit the shot and the St Mary’s player’s shot, and the Tigers clinched the win with O’Flynn stopped St Mary’s shooter.”We gave it everything we had,” said St. Mary’s coach Jim Foley, whose season ends at 10-7-4 with the loss.”Offense was not our strongest point.”We lose eight players to graduation and we will have 16 back to start again.” said Foley.
