LYNNFIELD – Somebody was going to pay Lynnfield’s loss to Newburyport last week, and it was Ipswich. The Pioneers took their frustrations out on the Tigers Saturday, shellacking them at the Middle School, on senior day, 41-0. Fittingly, the Pioneers’ skilled senior group led the way. Rick Berardino ripped off scoring runs of 28 and 52 yards while quarterback Gino Cohee ran for two scores and hooked up with AJ Roberto (3 catches, 87 yards) for a highlight-reel 70-yard score in the first quarter. While the offense rolled up 383 yards, the de fense limited Ipswich’s deceptive Wing-T attack to 121 net yards and six first downs.IpswichLynnfield41″The kids weren’t happy last week and wanted to come in and get some revenge,” said Weidman. “I have to credit the seniors. There wasn’t a lot that was said, but they led by example and set the tone and the mood for the week and the others followed. “Workmanlike is a good word to describe the week,” he said. “Early in the week I’d say they were subdued and very quiet and I wasn’t exactly sure how they would respond. “I was nervous all week. By the end of the week I realized they were serious.” The defending CAL Small champs, now 3-1 (8-1 overall), head to Hamilton on Saturday (1 p.m.) for a high-impact game with the first-place Generals (4-0; 7-2). Depending on the outcome of Friday’s Newburyport-Georgetown game, a number of scenarios could be in play but the bottom line is that Lynnfield must win to extend the race to Thanksgiving Day. Otherwise, HW heads to the post-season. Lynnfield delivered an immediate message when Cohee rambled 72 yards on a quarterback draw with just 1:12 expired. Senior Steve Ullian’s first of five PATs made it 7-0. Little more than three minutes later, Cohee connected with Roberto, who made a leaping catch over a defender on the deep post and outran the pursuit for a 70-yard score and 14-0 lead. Cohee completed a methodical 53-yard drive with a one-yard run midway through the second quarter and Berardino raced in from 28 yards late in the half for a 28-0 lead at the break. Berardino struck again from 52 yards late in the third quarter and back-up quarterback Mike Karavetsos tacked on a 48-yard scoring jaunt with 3:25 to play. Now comes HW and Weidman knows full well what to expect. “I’m looking for them to play tough and run the ball hard. :They don’t have any weaknesses,” he said.
