PEABODY – After living dangerously on Saturday in its Division 1 North preliminary game, the Peabody boys soccer team was greeted on Tuesday at Donahue Field by cold and drizzly conditions. The Tanners also had to contend with a red-hot Framingham team. The No. 23 seed Flyers had barely gotten in the tournament but were 6-2-2 in the second half of the season before blasting past Revere in their opener. They kept on charging Tuesday.Allan Araujo’s goal with 20 seconds left in the first half sent Framingham to the half with the lead despite being outplayed for nearly 40 minutes. Jon Silva then added a hat trick in the second half as Peabody’s season ended with a 4-1 loss.”That goal at the end of the first half was key,” Peabody coach Stan McKeen said. “We needed to score with the wind in the first half and we had our chances. That goal just took the steam out of us a little bit.”Framingham (8-6-6) made a living with runs down the outer wings of Peabody’s (14-4-2) defense all game long as Araujo distributed the ball effectively from his wing spot. The Tanners weren’t without their chances however as they actually outshot Framingham, 8-7, in the game but couldn’t get a goal when it was needed.”I think this game was a lot closer than the score indicates,” Framingham coach Dan Avery said. “I was impressed with Peabody’s speed and passing. We just were able to finish our chances and that’s what it comes down to in high school soccer.”Framingham came out quick and nearly made it 1-0 in the first five minutes thanks to a couple of quality chances that were turned away by Patrick Ryan. The Tanners then got their legs going and had a chance to break the ice but John Ramsey’s shot was stopped by Tarcisio Nascimento. For the bulk of the half, both teams struggled with field conditions that were sloppy at best along with a gusting wind and the constant drizzle that made any 50/50 ball an adventure. It looked like the teams would go to the half scoreless but the Flyers got Araujo open in space in the final seconds and he whistled a shot past Ryan to make it 1-0 Framingham.”Allan’s goal was huge for us. I think we kind of stole the momentum away there because they had it for most of the half,” Avery said.Peabody steadied itself and had a chance to tie the game early in the second half but Luke Finkelstein’s direct kick from 35 yards out sailed tantalizingly over the crossbar. And as usually happens in close games, Framingham charged right back down field and doubled its lead when Silva scored on a penalty kick after a foul in the box.”Framingham was able to score when they had the chance and we didn’t. That was the difference in the game,” McKeen said.Five minutes later, Araujo teamed with Silva to put a dagger in Peabody’s chances when Silva converted off a slick pass to make it 3-0 Flyers. Peabody got on the board with 9:02 left thanks to a penalty kick from Alec Cerqueira but Silva closed the scoring a minute later for the 4-1 final.
