Marblehead Youth football captures two titles

Marblehead Youth Football is celebrating two league championships this week.The eighth grade team, which won the B Division title as seventh graders, repeated in the A Division this year with a 22-0 win over Lynnfield Sunday at North Reading. The win capped an 11-0 season.Defense was the name of the game in this one with Marblehead, which defeated Masconomet in the playoffs last Thursday to reach the title game, holding Lynnfield to only one first down.Brooks Tyrell had two touchdowns for Marblehead – one a 12-yard run and the other a 60-yard dash through traffic into the end zone. Spencer Craig added the final TD on a 20-yard power run up the middle. Marblehead led 22-0 at the half.”We got out to a strong early lead and coasted home,” coach and league president Bruce Bial said.Willie Millett and Romello Matthews anchored a rock-solid defense.The sixth grade team, coached by Skip Percy, gave its fans a few gray hairs before pulling out a win in overtime. The team finished 11-0.Marblehead found itself losing 20-14 with a minute-and-a-half left in the game. Quarterback Ryan DeLuca hit Hayden Rockett with a 45-yard pass to tie the game and send it into overtime.North Reading got the ball first on the 10 and went four-and-out. Marblehead got its crack at the end zone next and on third down, Rockett powered in for the win.The season ends for both teams with the win. Marblehead had more than 300 youngsters participating in the program this fall.
