Thanksgiving 2010: Revere has had its ups and downs

Matthew Roy

November 24, 2010 by Matthew Roy

It has been a year of ups and downs for the Revere football team worthy of a roller coaster ride at an amusement park. The Patriots came out of the gate flying but saw their season go off the tracks with a pair of one point losses in midseason and will look to snap a seven game losing streak when they take on Winthrop tomorrow (10).”We got off to a real good start which was great but we’re not happy standing at 3-7,” Revere coach Lou Cicatelli said. “I am proud of my guys. They are playing hard every week and they’ve never quit. This is our Super Bowl.”Revere has been led all season by senior running back Trae Weathers. The numbers are simply staggering for Revere’s star. He has rushed for a school record 1,529 yards and is tied for the Division 1A lead in touchdowns at 27 with Gloucester’s Jordan Shairs. His 167 points rank him fifth in Eastern Mass in scoring.”The bottom line is Trae has basically got us to where we are,” Cicatelli said. “And he’s done a lot of it with a young offensive line. But he’s been marvelous and the strength of the team.”The Patriots started well this year, walloping Medford and beating Whittier in overtime. They moved to 3-0 with a convincing win over Danvers and then seemed to be on the way to a 4-0 start when they had a 21 point lead over Swampscott in the fourth quarter. Then the wheels came off the wagon as the Patriots saw the lead and the win disappear. A one point loss to Marblehead followed a week later and sent Revere into its conference slate struggling.”We had so many chances to win in the Swampscott game and then we came out flat against Marblehead. It seemed like it just fell apart from there,” Cicatelli said.Losses to Peabody, English, Classical, Gloucester and a tough 10 point loss to Salem send the Patriots in with an 0-5 conference record but they are primed and ready to try and end a two decade long losing streak to the Vikings.”This game means everything to the kids. We haven’t beaten them in a long time so we’re due,” Cicatelli said. “Their record may not be good but Winthrop is a lot better team than it shows.”Cicatelli knows that one thing which will have to be on the ball is his defense. The Patriot offense averaged nearly 26 points a game this season but a young defense struggled at times and surrendered nearly 32 points per game”Offensively we’ve been much better than in the past. But the defense gave up too many big plays this year,” Cicatelli said.
