REVERE – It is the kind of game that every kid growing up in Massachusetts imagines having on the big Thanksgiving Day football game.Captain of the football team?Check.Huge day rushing the ball?257 yards. Check.Score a touchdown?Four times over. Check.Dramatic win over rival? The winning touchdown in overtime. Check.Ladies and gentlemen, the Revere Patriots football team would like to present Trae Weathers.Weathers, the all time school leader in rushing yards, capped off his high school football career with a career day. And it all happened on Thanksgiving against Winthrop.”It feels great to win on Thanksgiving,” said Weathers. “It feels great to be here with my family, my teammates, and win.”The Vikings defense had trouble with Weathers all day. It was apparent from his first touchdown of the game, a 48-yard sprint, to his last carry, a one-yard touchdown run to win the game for Revere in overtime. In between Weathers ripped off another two touchdown runs from 11 and 15 yards out. His 257 total yards came on just 29 carries, almost a nine-yard average. At one point, Weathers was averaging 11 yards a rush. Revere would line up on first down and Weathers would run for another first down. Winthrop threw everything at him, often relying on gang tackling by four, five, and sometimes six players. The win over Winthrop by Revere is the first time in ages. In the 78- year history of this game, Revere wins have been scarce, especially recently. Coming into this game, Weathers had never defeated Winthrop.”It feels good to get this win,” said Weathers. “This game and win is something that I will never forget for the rest of my life.””We knew with Weathers that it was going to be difficult on us in overtime,” said Winthrop coach Sean Driscoll. “When you only have to go 10 yards, and you get a guy who can run three or four yards every time, it makes it tough.”Weathers is also humble about his abilities.”I do not run for one touchdown today or this year without my offensive line,” said Weathers. “I am with those guys 100 percent of the time.”With his size (6-0, 210 lbs.) and resume, it is not a shock that Weathers is being coveted by football teams at the next level. Schools such as UMass Amherst, UNH, and even Boston College have expressed interest in Weathers. He is also considering plying his trade for one year in prep school at Wagner.”He is a special kid,” said Revere coach Lou Cicatelli. “He is a great player, but is also a great team leader. He really is a great kid.”
