NAHANT – The Nahant Historical Society has a unique gift for anyone’s Christmas list. The 2011 Nahant Historical Society calendar, which is on sale now, offers a unique glimpse into two centuries of life in Nahant, full of photographs and artwork. Some of the photographs date back to the 1800s, including historic photographs of establishments and homes no longer standing.A painting of Tudor Wharf by the late Lucy H. Doane graces the cover. Doane was commissioned to paint the Tudor Wharf scene in 1980 by Linda Sterenberg Eveleigh.Nahant Historical Society Curator Calantha Sears said this is the 31st consecutive year the NHS has published a calendar.?Our mission is preserving Nahant history,” Sears said. “We are always collecting, cataloging, preserving and exhibiting pieces of Nahant history. Our collection of photographs, paintings, artifacts and other memorabilia enables us to share the history of our unique and beautiful town today and for generations to come.”Sears pointed out the inside cover of the calendar, which depicts the cover of every calendar published by the NHS for the last 30 years.?Some people collect the calendars,” she said. “I know people who love them and have one from each year. There is a lot of Nahant history in those calendars.”New this year are little historical tidbits compiled by Robert Wilson for various dates throughout the year. For example on July 20, 1905, the first car ran on the Nahant & Lynn Railway and a sea serpent was sighted off Nahant on Aug. 5, 1880.Cost for the NHS 2011 calendar is $10. It is on sale Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Nahant Village Church holiday fair, 27 Cliff St. It is also available in the public library and at the Nahant Historical Society, 41 Valley Road.
