SALEM ? A convicted sex offender from Lynn who escaped from Salem District Court earlier today has been captured by state troopers a few blocks from the courthouse.Karl Hackney, 45, fled Salem District Court in handcuffs shortly before noon, but was back in custody just over an hour later.Authorities said he was spotted on Hawthorne Boulevard, where police apprehended him.Hackney was slated for arraignment on firearms and narcotics charges stemming from incidents in Lynn on June 2 and 3.Police put out a BOLO (Be on the Look Out) for Hackney late Monday morning, saying he should be considered dangerous.Hackney is described as black, 5 feet 10 inches, 170 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair.Hackney, a Level 3 sex offender, was indicted last Thursday by a special grand jury. He was charged with assault by means of a dangerous weapon, carrying a loaded firearm and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling.He has also been scheduled for a pre-trial hearing in Salem Superior Court on Dec. 21 for striking a court officer.Read Tuesday’s edition of the Daily Item and visit www.itemlive.com for more details.
