LYNN – It was another entertaining day of basketball at Lynn Classical on Saturday as several of the area’s top teams and players came together for the 2010 Paul Duchane Memorial Jamboree.Click here for a photo gallery. For a lot of teams, it was a chance to iron out final kinks for when things tip off on Tuesday. For others, however, it was a chance to break in a group of new players and systems. One of the teams in that spot was Lynn English, the defending NEC North champion. The Bulldogs, however, will have to rely on youth to get back to the top and on Saturday they faced a stiff test in Bishop Fenwick, a Division 2 North finalist from a year ago.In what turned out to be the most entertaining game of the afternoon, the Crusaders ran off to a big lead in the first half before English closed within two in the final minutes. Fenwick, however, held off the challenge and took a 27-21 win.”English is a good team and they’re never out of a game with the way they play defense,” Fenwick coach Tim Harrington said. “It was a good challenge for us.”Fenwick came out of the gates absolutely flying, taking an 8-1 lead before the Bulldogs could get their first field goal from LaShaunda Hogan. It was Hogan who singlehandedly kept English close in the first half as Rebecca Graves and Amy Pelletier teamed to score 12 of Fenwick’s 16 points en route to a 10-point lead.”LaShaunda kept us in the game during that first half,” English coach Fred Hogan said. “Our young girls, though, came in and played well.”English could make no headway on the Fenwick lead early in the second half before its pressure defense began to pay off. Olivia Newsom had back-to-back buckets before Miranda Hogan and D.D. Woumn scored to cut the lead to 20-16.Shannon Calnan’s basket got English within two at 22-20 before Pelletier helped trigger a 5-1 run to close things for the Crusaders.St. Mary’s 26, Danvers 16The Spartans shook off some early nerves to take care of a pesky Falcon team. Sharell Sanders and Maggie Carey each had six points to lead the St. Mary’s attack. Danvers was led by four points each from Janelle Saggese and Danielle Sherry.Classical 23, Malden 14The Rams jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the early going and were never seriously challenged from there.Kristin Lauria and Hannah Byrne led Classical with seven points.
