School roundup: Classical girls defeat Salem

The Classical High girls track team defeated Salem, 54 1/2-31 1/2, Monday at Lynn Tech.Saffi Bangura and Hulerie McGuffie came up big for the Rams with Bangura winning the 50 (6.7) and McGuffie the 300 (46.8). The two also ran the first and second legs, respectively, on the winning 4 x 400 relay team. Rebecca Potter, who also took first in the high jump, and Angela Erelli rounded out the foursome.The Rams also had a first from Stella Athanasopoulos in the mile (6:55) and they swept the two-mile led by Allison Kurpiel (14:30). Kathy Perez and Jessie Perez took the next two spots. Mackenzie Coppinger won the shot put (29-9).Salem had firsts from Devyn Ryan in the 50 hurdles (8.5); Brandi Lavoie, 600 (2:08); and Khrina Corpuz, 1,000 (3:51).Classical is 1-1 overall, 1-0 in the Northeastern Conference South. Salem is 0-2.English 43, Saugus 38At Swampscott, the Bulldogs also picked up a win. Saugus had firsts from Ashley Zeboski in the hurdles; Ashley Aldred in the 300 and the high jump; Rebecca Krasowski in the 600; Nicole Lynch, the mile, and Zeboski, Mary Dixon, Ashley Firth and Ashley Aldred, the 4 x 400 relay.BOYS TRACKEnglish 62, Saugus 24At Swampscott, the Bulldogs (1-1) had a productive day with wins from Melvin Tavares in the 55 dash; Jared Fossa, 600; Alex Bonitto, mile; Chris Birotte, 1,000; Ri Yan, two-mile and Derek Stevens, the shot put.Saugus (0-2) had winning performances from Steven Essery in the hurdles and Olisa Obiefuna in the high jump with a personal best (5-9).Swampscott 77, Winthrop 9At Swampscott, the Big Blue (2-0) picked up wins from Jermaine Kelly in the 55-meter hurdles (8.0); Olivier Narcisse, 50 (6.5); Elijah Clark, 300 dash (41.4); Matt Narciello, 600 (1:38); Shiloh Clark, 1,000-meters (2:57); Peter Hale, mile (5:05); Jake Conaty, 2-mile (11:04); Phil Turner, high jump (5-3) and S. Clark, E. Clark, Declan McClung and Keenan McClung, the 4 x 400 relay (3:57).Peabody 52, Marblehead 34At Peabody, the Tanners (2-0) had a couple of impressive performances. Zach Grube won the high jump (6-2); Nicholas Marotta recorded a personal best in a win in the shot put (42-9 3/4); Nat Gaye won the 45-yard dash (5.1); Austin Brewster, the 300 (36.5); Evan Braz, the 1,000 (2:35) and Nick Christensen, the mile (4:48). Nick Ingham took second in the high jump with a 6-0. His previous best jump was 5-4. He also took second in the 600.Marblehead’s Patrick Casey won the 2-mile (11:13); Will Herlihy, the 600 (1:22); Nolan Raimo, the 45-yard hurdles (6.0); and Herlihy, Raimo, Jake Smith and Tyree Williams, the 4 x 400 relay (3:58).Salem 46, Classical 35At Tech, the Witches (1-1) got the job done with wins from Kyle Florence, 50 hurdles (7.9); Josh Gillooly, 50 (5.8); Christian Guzman, 300 (40.8); Troy Gilbert, 600 (1:43); Dan Collins, 1,000 (3:07); and Kinnon Church, mile (5:14).Classical’s Raymond Perry won the two-mile (11:54); Dan Omoregie, the shot put (44-8 1/2); George Clark, high jump (5-4). Yabesi David placed in the 300 with a 43.7.SWIMMINGFenwick 85, Matignon 71At JFK Pool in Somerville, Jimmy Gauthier was a double winner for the Crusaders (1-1), taking first in the 200 free (2:25) and the 100 free (1:03). Katie Schmeck also won two events, the 200 IM (2:31) and the 100 fly (1:12) and Linsey Andrews took home a second in the 100 back (1:09), qualifying for the sectionals in the process. Brandon McCauley won the 50 free (28.59).Fenwick won all the relays with Andrews, Bridgett Townsend, Schmeck and Lysandra Fiskatoris taking the 200-medley relay (2:11.38); Townsend, McCauley, Brandon Jordan and Gauthier, the 200-free relay (1:58.85); and Andrews, Gauthier, Fiskatoris and Schmeck, the 400-free relay (4:32.69).GIRLS HOCKEYMarblehead 2, Masco 0At Pingree, Elena Driscoll gave the Magicians (2-1-0) a 1-0 lead midway through the second period with Keelin Fallon and Rachel McKay getting assists. McKay added an insurance tally in the third period with Driscoll getting the assist. Molly Depew picked up the shutout.
