LYNN – The Blizzard of 2010 brought enough snow for kids to create an entire village of snow people, but other local activities have also offered children something to do while they were home for winter break. The Lynn Public Library hosted a “Dance Dance Revolution” dance-off on Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the children’s room for children in grades two through five. The Lynnfield Public Library hosted a “New Year’s Party” Wednesday at 6:30 p.m in the children’s room. Stories with a “New Year’s” theme were read to children and they also had the option of doing New Year’s-related crafts and activities, said Pat Kelly, Head of Reference.Connery Memorial Rink in Lynn will host open-skating for the public today and Friday from 12:30 p.m. until 2:20 p.m. Admission is $5 per person and $4 for rental skates, which are available on a first-come first-served basis. The Lynn YMCA will continue giving out free guest passes to individuals who bring five or more canned goods, which are then donated to local food pantries, says Branch Director Audrey Jimenez. The guest pass will allow visitors to use all of the facilities and/or participate in fitness classes offered at the Lynn YMCA for the day.”It’s warm; we’re open,” says Jimenez. “Come take a steam bath or take a class or come work out on your own in the fitness center. There’s plenty to do.”The pool will be open for “family swim” from noon to 2 p.m., through Friday. “Youth swim” will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and “high school” swim is from 4:30 to 5 p.m. for the rest of the week. The Lynn YMCA will be open on New Year’s Day from 8:30 a.m. until noon. For those interested in getting some exercise and some free clam chowder on New Year’s Day, the Breakheart Reservation in Saugus will host a “First Day Hike” on Saturday at noon.Individuals will meet at the Saugus Visitors Center, 177 Forest St., Saugus and will proceed to the reservation, where they can choose to do one of three hikes: easy, moderate or advanced, says Park Supervisor Anthony Guthro. Each hike is approximately two hours long and participants can look forward to some warm clam chowder at the end of the hike, donated by Kelly’s Roast Beef.
