Basketball: Beverly holds off Masco in overtime thriller

The Beverly boys basketball team battled Masconomet right from the opening tip all the way to the final buzzer in overtime ? and the Panthers prevailed, 66-60, in the Chelsea Holiday Tournament final Thursday night.Beverly led 58-57 late in the fourth quarter, when Masco hit a three pointer to go up 60-58 with 20 seconds left. Beverly called a timeout, and Ronnie Alford hit a jumper out of the timeout to tie the game 60-60, and put the game into overtime. Beverly controlled the overtime, outscoring Masco 12-6.”This was a great win for my team,” Beverly coach Scott Lewis said. “They started off a little slow, but found a way to overcome that against a good team. I am very proud of my team.”Leading the way for Beverly (4-2) was Aven Jones with 17 points. Alford had 14 points to go with his game-tying shot in regulation.Danvers 65, Billerica 58At Billerica, Mike Scarfo led the Falcons (2-4) with 16 points, which was a career high. The Falcons also had strong contributions from Sean Mahegan (24 points) and George Merry (3 points and 13 rebounds).GIRLS BASKETBALLGloucester 55, Bedford 48At Stoneham, the duo of Heather and Hannah Cain combined to score 37 points. Hannah Cain was named to the Stoneham all-tournament team and she added 11 rebounds and six steals to her monster game. Audrey Knowlton added 18 points for Gloucester.Marblehead 42, Hamilton-Wenham 32At Marblehead, the Magicians dominated the first quarter, outscoring the Generals 15-0. Marblehead led 25-7 at the half. The Marblehead defense held the Generals under double-digits until the third quarter. Leading the way for Marblehead was Olivia Raisner (a team-high 9 points). Kathryn DiGiammarino and Carley McIver both chipped in with eight points each.
