A pair of North powerhouses met up on Thursday in the finals of the Haverhill Holiday Classic and it was the Division 3 North champs, Marblehead, who got the best of D2 stalwart Wilmington, 4-3 at Veteran’s Memorial Rink.”It was a really good win for us with a couple guys out,” Marblehead coach Bob Jackson said. “We had some guys who hadn’t played in a while come in and play really well.”The Headers (3-1-1) were in control most of the way against the Cape Ann League power as Tyler Bates scored just 2:53 in, assisted by Tom Koopman and Ian Maag, for a 1-0 Marblehead lead.Second line center Tyler Gelineau doubled the margin in the second period, assisted by left winger Austin Haley, at 5:10. And when Hunter Graves scored a shorthanded goal early in the third, assisted by Ben Koopman, the Headers were up 3-0 and in full control. The Wildcats then rallied to cut the lead to 3-2 midway through the third before Bates scored for a second time, set up by freshman defenseman Liam Gillis, to restore the two-goal cushion.St. John’s (D) 7, St. John’s (S) 2At the Hart Center in Worcester, this one was much closer than the score showed as the teams were tied at 2-2 late in the second before Colin Blackwell broke the tie. Sam Kurker’s power play goal early in the third, his first of a pair in the final frame, made it 4-2 and sent the Eagles (2-0-1) on their way.”Colin had the biggest goal of the game,” St. John’s coach Kristian Hanson said. “They had all the momentum and right off the faceoff we get a big goal. Then we got that fourth goal and controlled the third period.”Shane Eiserman had two goals and two assists for the Eagles while Blackwell added a pair of assists. Derek Palm and Jarrod Hines also had goals for the Prep.”It’s a long bus ride to play a quality opponent,” Hanson said. “You like to go out and win these games.”BOYS TRACKPeabody 63, Swampscott 23At Peabody, The Tanners took nine events and had eight different winners.
