January 20, 2011 by Mario DiNitto

The Classical High girls basketball team keeps finding ways to win with Everett the latest victim, 63-53, at Classical.”This was probably our best game, offensively, of the season,” coach Tom Sawyer said. “We’re moving the ball well, finding open players. We started off a little slow in the first quarter, but once we got going we started hitting some shots.”Freshman Kristin Lauria scored a career high 22 points. She also got the job done on the boards with 15 rebounds.”She’s starting to get more and more confidence,” Sawyer said. “She’s not overwhelmed out there. She’s very competitive.”Hannah Byrne (17 points) and Tashanna Brown (6 points, 11 assists) also came up big for the 8-3 Rams.BOYS BASKETBALLSalem 56, Winchester 54At Winchester, the Witches showed resilience in their comeback overtime win. With under a minute to go, Salem (7-2, 6-2 NEC) found itself trailing by seven and looking for some heroics. Enter Antonio Reyes. Reyes nailed two three-pointers, including one with five seconds remaining for the tie to send the game to extra time. In overtime, Brad Skeffington stole a Winchester inbounds pass, and made a quick dish to Christian Dunston, who made the layup as time expired giving Salem the win. Reyes finished the game with 20 points, 16 rebounds, and three blocks, while Raphy Medrano added 14 points.”We had scouted (Winchester) earlier in the week and knew it was going to be a tough game,” said Salem coach Tom Doyle. “It was a tough matchup for us and it is good to see the guys play hard and not quit when they were down seven towards the end of the game.”St. John’s 89, Xaverian 60At Westwood, Pat Connaughton scored 30 points and recorded nine assists and eight rebounds to lead the Prep in a convincing conference win. Also for the undefeated Eagles (10-0, 4-0 CC) Steve Haladyna scored 24 points and hauled down nine rebounds.Cathedral 83, Fenwick 63At Boston, the Crusaders saw a six-point halftime lead quickly evaporate against the heat of a 30 point third quarter outburst by their hosts. For Fenwick in the loss, Alex Morsey scored 36 points and doled out seven assists. Ryan Lipka added ten points and nine rebounds to the effort.”We played a really good first half, but (Cathedral) started getting some rebounds in the third quarter when they wanted and it hurt us,” said Fenwick coach Mike Kane.
