Among the traits of high-quality teams is the ability to play through an off night and win on the road. The St. Mary’s girls basketball team did exactly that Saturday, coming from behind to scratch out a 55-43 win at Austin Prep. The Spartans (6-1, 12-1) found themselves down by one at the half, 24-23, but turned things around after intermission to secure a double-digit win. Austin Prep (0-6, 1-7) remained winless in the Catholic Central Large.”It was a physical game and we didn’t play particularly well. You’re not going to have your ‘A’ game every time and we had enough to get by and grind out a win on the road, which is very tough to do in this league,” said coach Jeff Newhall.Tori Faieta (12 points, 8 blocks), Cassi Amenta (11 points, 8 rebounds) and Kirsten Ferrari (10 points, 12 assists, 7 steals) powered the Spartans with strong two-way games. Ferrari knocked down St. Mary’s only three-pointers, dropping in a pair from beyond the arc.St. Mary’s takes on Merrimack Valley power Central Catholic in a non-league encounter tonight in Lawrence.Revere postponedThe Patriots’ scheduled game at Medford was postponed indefinitely due to flooding at Medford’s gym.GYMNASTICSWinthrop (2-5) accumulated 126.9 points, finishing behind Danvers (136.7) and Masconomet (135.8) on Saturday.Captain Jessica Fahey led the Vikings, recording one of her highest all-around scores of the season (32.45) while competing with a sore back. Captain Danica Dell’ano recorded a 32.15 in the all-around. Samantha Amico amassed 23.5 points competing in the vault, beam and floor while Brandie Holland finished at 22.45 competing in the vault, bars and beam.”The two Lynn English girls (Amico and Holland) have really been strong for us this year in their three events,” said coach Peter Gobiel.WRESTLINGLynnfield (12-5) dropped two of three matches in a four-way but coach Craig Stone was more than happy with the Pioneers’ performance. Lynnfield topped Everett, 48-18, while losing to Triton, 43-33, and Melrose, 42-36.”The two we lost, one match could have swung it the other way. Triton is the defending Division Three North dual meet champion and we were right there. To be able to compete in that company is encouraging,” said Stone.Jeff Corcoran (130), Richie Falcione (135) and Philip Bishop (152) were triple winners for the Pioneers while Eric Kerr (103), Matt Foss (112), Kyle Whelan (140) and Nikko Burtman (215) pinned down two wins apiece.TRACKLynnfield’s girls had the best finish among area schools at the Division Four State Relays Sunday at The Reggie Lewis Center.
