School Roundup: Fenwick wins CCL Small title

The Bishop Fenwick hockey team captured its third consecutive Catholic Central League Small title Monday with a 2-0 win over Marian at Marlboro.?I?m proud of the way the boys played,” Fenwick coach Dan Lynch said, noting that they played three road games in a row and won them all.?Three consecutive road wins n that?s a testament to how hard the boys are working,” he said.Matt Anderson put the Crusaders on the board midway through the first period with Andrew Ruby getting the assist. The Jets took a breather and then pumped out three quick goals in the final 4:37. Finnigan netted his second of the night, unassisted. Martin scored from Kyle Devin with 1:40 remaining and 17 seconds later Tony Uva found the net for a 6-0 Lynn lead. Freshman Eric Brazell (his first varsity goal) scored with 34 seconds left in the game for the 7-0 final. Jordan Morelli, Joe Lannon, MacDonald, D.J. Hunt, Brett Erelli and Nick Comeau all had one assist each.Jets coach Joe Conlon was happy to see the team’s hard work pay off.”This is going to be a defining week for us, so it was good to get the win,” he said, noting that the team has four games in the next six days.Comeau was in net for the Jets (3-10-1). He made 16 saves while the Cambridge goalie had to handle 35 shots.Malden Catholic 10, Bp. Guertin (NH) 3At Valley Forum II in Malden, Saugus’ Mike Vecchione had four goals as the Lancers (11-2-2) rolled to the win over the perennial New Hampshire power.Vecchione now has 22 goals and 49 points this season to lead area scorers. His linemates Ryan Fitzgerald and Brendan Collier added seven and four point nights respectively.Marblehead 3, Danvers 2At Rockett Arena, Marblehead (9-4-3) scored three goals in the final period to put away the Falcons. Neither team could find the net in the first period, but the Falcons broke the ice in the second on a goal by Joe Strangie. Marblehead took a 3-1 lead in the third on goals by Austin Haley, Ryan Dempsey and Jake Kulevich and then hung on after Danvers’ Brian O?Keefe got one back with 1:50 remaining.Marblehead coach Bob Jackson said his team carried play in the first period, but the momentum shifted to Danvers in the second. Marblehead came out strong in the final period with Haley?s goal providing the kick starting the offense. Mike Harper was in net for the win.SWIMMINGVocational MeetThe Tech boys finished second in the Vocational Swim meet. Josh Rockwood took fourth in the 500 free, shaving 22 seconds off his time (6:42.45). The Tigers went 2-3-7-9 in diving led by Rob Miele, second (165.45, pb) and Doug Sermeno, third (154.60). Jake Malchowski and Dan Hegarty took seventh and ninth.The Tigers are still waiting to see if they will share the Commonwealth Conference Small title with Blue Hills or win it outright. The teams each had one loss during the season (to each other). Coach Brad Tilley is waiting to see if there is a tiebreaker or if the teams are co-champs. Tech finished sixth in the Commonwealth Conference meet, which was won by Mystic Valley.NEC MeetAt Salem State College, in the first day of the Northeastern Conference swim meet, Tyler Phillips of Marblehead won girls diving with 187 points and Zach Romanovski of Marblehead won boys diving. Peabody’s Michelle Manfra took second. In the 500 free, Marblehead’s Harrison Rodt won the boys race and India Boland of Beverly won
