Boys basketball: Saugus holds off late Gloucester charge

The Saugus boys basketball team had things going its way on Tuesday in Gloucester as the Sachems led by 16 in the fourth quarter and looked to be on cruise control.Then the foot came off the pedal and the Fishermen nearly pulled off a comeback for the ages, getting as close as three points as time ran down but the Sachems escaped with a 66-63 win.Omar Benabicha had a monster game for the Sachems (8-8) going for 31 points including a perfect 10-10 effort from the foul line. Curtis Casella also finished in double figures, ending up with 17 points.Gloucester got 23 points from Mike Tomaino and 19 points by Adam Philpott.English 94, Revere 65At Revere, the Bulldogs (14-1) got 29 points from Travonne Berry-Rogers and a season high 24 from Corey McMillen as they blitzed the Patriots.”We’re starting to play good basketball right now,” English coach Buzzy Barton said. “That was Corey’s best offensive game of the year.”Revere got 33 points from Greg Cabral in the loss.Chelsea 74, Tech 69 (OT)At Chelsea, the Tigers (9-4, 6-3 Commonwealth Conference) trailed by 11 at halftime but charged back to tie the game at 64-64 after regulation. Richie Warren Jr. had a game high 26 for Tech in the loss and now stands 12 points short of 1,000 for his career.Trey Gallo added 16 points and E.J. Ward had 11 for the Tigers, who are back home on Friday.Winthrop 63, Swampscott 41At Winthrop, the Vikings (11-5) led by five at the half before pulling away in the second half. Anthony Hatzisavas had 20 points and 14 rebounds while Quintin Dale added 14 points and 20 rebounds for Winthrop.Swampscott got 16 points by Mike Walsh.Marblehead 45, Danvers 34At Danvers, Brian Gellert had 14 points and Matt Temme added 12 as the Magicians (11-3) got ready for tonight’s showdown with English by getting past a gritty Falcon club on the road.Sean Mehegan had 12 points to lead the Falcons.Salem 78, Peabody 55At Peabody, Antonio Reyes had 22 points and 18 rebounds while Brad Skeffington added 17 points and 10 boards as the Witches (13-2) avenged an early season loss to the Tanners (6-10).Kyle Franey had 16 points to lead Peabody. Steve Girolamo added 12 and Jon Byrne finished with 11.Fenwick 66, Christo Rey 42At Fenwick, Mike LaChance had 20 points and five rebounds while Alex Morsey added 15 points and five assists as the Crusaders (4-11) cruised to the win.
