The Swampscott High Athletic Hall of Fame will induct 15 new members at a banquet Saturday, March 26, at the Oceanview in Nahant.This year’s list of inductees features athletes and coaches who left their mark on their respective programs over a span of nearly 70 years. The evening will also serve to honor the 1949 Class B state baseball champions, as well as the FLORADORA girls of the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s.The banquet will begin at 6 p.m. Tickets are $45 per person and will be available at the high school or by contacting Peter Shribman by email at [email protected] inductees are:John (Jack) Coan (class of 1945): a starting lineman at age 15 on the 1943 Class C state championship team ? started the hockey program at SHS and played football and hockey at Harvard ? youngest (17) to ever to start a Harvard/Yale football game.Gordon Clapp (1950): a member of the state championship baseball team in 1949 ? Boston Globe All-Scholastic in baseball ? starting pitcher in New England all-star game and a starter in left field for Duke in the College World Series.Suzanne Newhall (1951): captain of the basketball, softball and volleyball teams and Most Valuable Player in field hockey and basketball.William (Bill) Nelson (1956): captain in football, basketball and baseball ? high scorer in basketball ? named to local all-star teams.Richard Coe (1959): Record-American all-scholastic in hockey ? led the North Shore hockey league in scoring ? never lost a game in football including in the seventh and eighth grade ? Agganis football all-star ? played hockey at Norwich University and is a member of the Norwich Hall of Fame.James Finlay (1970): first place in the all-state Class C meet in cross country and second place in the All-New England meet in 1966 and 1967.Alicia Emery (1981): Boston Globe and Herald All-Scholastic in cross country ? won 25 consecutive dual meets ? first place in Division 3 Eastern Mass. and first place in the two-mile in the Class C outdoor track meet.Brian Hayes (1993): captain of the football, basketball and baseball teams ? Daily Item and Salem News All-Star in football and baseball ? MVP of 1993 state baseball tournament won by Swampscott ? played baseball at Bentley.Michael Madden (1996): captain of the football, basketball and baseball teams ? All-Scholastic in baseball; threw a no-hitter vs. Melrose in the state tournament ? rushed for over 1,000 yards ? played football and baseball at Harvard.Peter Bush (1997): captain of the football and baseball teams ? Globe and Herald All-Scholastic in football ? MVP in the Agganis football game ? played in the Shriners football and baseball games ? played football at the University of New Hampshire.Jamie Torelli (1997): one of Swampscott’s best softball players ? Northeastern Conference All-Star four years ? led Big Blue to first tournament game where she hit two grand slams vs. Salem ? Also played basketball.Emily Nichols (1998): captain in soccer, basketball and track ? Northeastern Conference and Daily Item All-Star in basketball ? scored more than 900 points ? scholarship to play basketball at Canisius before transferring to Stonehill ? top 10 finish in state Heptathlon ? Daily Item All-Star in track junior and senior year.Michael Smiley (2000); ? scored 1,522 points in basketball ? Boston Globe All-Scholastic junior and senior year ? averaged 24.5 points per game senior year ? played basketball at Holy Cross.Haven Wynne (2000): captain in tennis, basketball and softball ? MVP of the Northeastern Conference all four years ? had a 71-1 career record ? NEC and Daily Item softball all-star three times ? Agganis All-Star ? played tennis and softball at Merrimack College.Frank DeFelice: had 465 wins in baseball in nearly 40 years of coaching ? Massachusetts Coaches Hall of Fame ? won five sectional titles and the 1993 state title ? football coach 1965-1971 and head coach 1977-1982.
