The St. Mary’s basketball team is a win away from a Catholic Central League/Large championship.The Spartans beat Bishop Fenwick, 56-51, in a real struggle at the Crusader gym.Right now, St. Mary’s is a game up over Cathedral with one game left – against each other, in Boston, Wednesday.The major player for St. Mary’s was sophomore Matt Manning, who scored 19 points and pulled down 19 rebounds.”He did a wonderful job,” coach Kevin Moran said.Nick Gagliolo had 14 points for St. Mary’s. Alex Morsey poured in 22 for Fenwick.Marblehead 62, S’scott 43At Marblehead, Tom Stockwell had 14 points and Brian Gellert added 13 as the Magicians (14-4) turned up the wick in the second half to overcome a three point deficit at the half.Mike Dusenberry chipped in with 10 points for Marblehead. Swampscott was led by 12 points from Brian Sullivan.Winthrop 62, Saugus 56At Winthrop, the Vikings (12-6) trailed by one at the half but outscored Saugus 20-8 in the third quarter to assume control of the game.Anthony Hatzisavas had 22 points to lead Winthrop while Taj Generazzo added 17. Saugus’ Omar Benabicha eclipsed the 1,000 point mark for his career en route to finishing with 18.Beverly 72, Salem 70At Salem State University, Salem had things well in hand for three quarters before the Panthers (8-10) stormed back, outscoring the Witches 24-11 in the final eight minutes to steal away the win literally on Avon Jones’ pilfer with eight seconds left.Zach Zigglebaum had 24 points and 19 rebounds to lead Beverly. Chris Keaton added 20 and Jones finished with 13. Salem was led by a game-high 27 points by Antonio Reyes with Raphy Medrano having 17 and Dario Medrano finishing with 16.Peabody 76, Revere 66At Revere, Brian DeAngelis had 21 points and nine rebounds as the Tanners (8-11) held off a second half charge by Revere. John Byrne also finished with 21 points while Kyle Boyce had 20 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and five steals.In other action, Danvers clinched a state tournament berth with a 50-46 win over rival Gloucester.
