It has been a busy weekend for the Tech boys basketball team. The Tigers defeated Whittier, 75-58, on Saturday, then lost a close one to Winthrop, 75-66, on Sunday in what coach Marvin Avery called a great game.Tech finishes the MIAA regular season 13-5.Richie Warren Jr. scored almost 70 points over the two games combined, including a 39-point effort against Whittier. Mike Duarte added 22 points in Saturday’s game.Against Winthrop, Warren scored 29 and Trey Gallo added 18. The Vikings (14-6) got a balanced effort from Anthony Hatzisavas (23 points, 15 rebounds), Michael Griffin (20 points) and Quinton Dale (20 points, 10 rebounds). Winthrop led by one at the break (40-39) before breaking it open in the third quarter and hanging on at the end.Winthrop coach Dave Brown saluted Avery, describing him as “a class act. He’s run a great program the last 15 years. They’re always one of the top teams in the state.”St. John’s 86, Andover 69St. John’s 86, BC High 73The Prep won the Comcast Basketball Tournament thanks to wins over Andover Saturday and BC High Sunday. Pat Connaughton was the MVP and Steve Haladyna made the all-tournament team.GIRLS BASKETBALLCambridge R&L 54, Peabody 38At Conigliaro Gym in Lynn, the Tanners were eliminated from playoff contention in a physical loss in the St. Mary’s Spartan Classic.”This is a really classy team,” said Peabody (7-11) coach Jane Heil in reference to her squad. “We may have been knocked out of playoff contention, but I’d take this team anywhere.”Taylor Provost was the Tanners’ leading scorer with nine points. Brittany LeFave had four points and seven assists, and Carolyn Scacchi added five points, three assists and nine rebounds.Cambridge (13-5) received major contributions from Dyamond Gardner (14 points), Donnaizha Falcon (13) and Shaquila Anderson (nine) as the team pulled away with a 16-8 run in the third quarter.Fenwick 59, Groton-Dunstable 41At Groton, the Crusaders qualified for the state tournament. Amy Pelletier had 25 points and six steals for the Crusaders.
