It was a special day on many fronts for the Gloucester girls basketball team on Monday.The Fishermen claimed the Division 2 title at the Spartan Classic for the first time in six tries and saw senior Hannah Cain go over the 1,000 point mark for her career.Cain finished with a triple-double, racking up 28 points, 20 rebounds and 11 assists as the Fishermen defeated Tewksbury, 65-55, at Conigliaro Gymnasium.”The girls worked very hard for this accomplishment,” Gloucester coach Jon Flanagan said. “And Hannah is a special player. I’ve known that since she was a freshman.”Cain was named the tournament’s MVP.”Hannah is a special kid and a great student,” Flanagan said. “She’s the kind of kid one would want to lead a program.”Cain came into the game needing three points to reach the milestone and she got it done early thanks to a pair of free throws. Gloucester trailed by three after a quarter before turning up the jets and taking a 37-30 lead at the half.Cain’s younger sister, Heather, was also a force to be reckoned with on Monday as she finished with a 21-point effort.English 47, Peabody 43At Conigliaro Gym in Lynn, the Bulldogs (12-9) got 15 points from Lashaunda Hogan and 12 from Catherine Stinson as they prevailed in the Division 1 consolation game at the Spartan Classic.English used an 11-5 third quarter to break open a close game at halftime. It took a power play goal by Chris McLeod, his second of the game, with 6:55 left to give the Headers the winning margin. Hunter Graves had the other Marblehead goal while Ryan Dempsey assisted on all three goals.Beverly 6, Marian 0At Rockett Arena, freshman Graham Doherty and senior Troy Cabral each had a pair of goals while Connor Irving had three assists for the Panthers (13-5-1). Allison Butler and Mikayla Donovan added third period tallies as Sarah Foss made 19 saves for St. Mary’s.Marblehead 2, Winthrop/Lynn 0At Larsen Arena in Winthrop, the Headers (11-7-1) broke a scoreless tie on Rachel Ulian’s goal with 5:26 remaining in the third and iced it on Casey McDonald’s goal with 33 seconds remaining to deal the Bulldogs (17-3-1) their first loss since early January.Marblehead’s Molly Depew turned aside all 31 shots she faced. Katie Burt had 22 saves for the Bulldogs.
