WINTHROP – Things are looking up for the Lynn/Winthrop/Saugus combined girls hockey team.Thursday’s 9-0 win over Peabody in their season’s finale gave the Bulldogs a 15-3-1 record – the best record in its history.The Bulldogs also saw Taylor Brown of Winthrop named the most valuable player of the Girls Eastern Mass. Ice Hockey League. Also, goalie Katie Burt made the all-conference team.Other all-stars included MacKenzie Clark, Courtney McGague, Hannah LoPresti and Cat Salvetti.Thursday, the Bulldogs gave Winthrop sixth grader Gretchen Howard a chance to play in the net, and she responded with a 17-save shutout. Meanwhile, the Dogs piled it on offensively, with two goals each from Chelsey Bartlett and Anna Fucillo, and singletons from Brown, Clark, Kara Donati, Caroline McKinnon and Lopresti.Coach Anthony Martucci said it was a good win for the girls, since they lost a tough one earlier this week to Marblehead.”We outshot them,” said Martucci, “but we couldn’t put it past their goaltender. She really stood up.”(Emily) Hudak always does a nice job,” Martucci said. “That’s always a tough game for us no matter what.”Now, the Bulldogs wait for the weekend MIAA hockey pairings.”We’re hoping to finish with a decent high seed, and possibly get a bye in the opening round,’ Martucci said.The Bulldogs play in Division 1, as do both St. Mary’s and Marblehead. The Lady Spartans, three-time defending state champions, also handed Lynn/Winthrop one of its three defeats.
