LYNN – A frightened store clerk at Arnold?s Bakery smacked a would-be robber with a metal rod on Monday after he barged in, demanding money.Police say the suspect, a white male with a medium build wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt with a gray NY logo on it and finger-less gloves, walked into the bakery at approximately 2:10 p.m., holding a knife in an aggressive manner, shouting for money.The clerk at the Vietnamese store fought back by slamming a large metal rod down on the suspect?s hand, causing him to drop his knife. Lt. William Sharpe said the suspect ran away, empty-handed, in the direction of Phillips Avenue.?She whacked him good,” said witness Erin Madden. “She just leaned over the counter, swung at him and said, get out of here!”Madden, who had come to the store to cash in a scratch ticket, said she saw the suspect pick up his knife before he ran away and described him as being in his late 20s.?Why someone would do an ignorant thing like this, I don?t know,” she said. “I?ve never seen anything like this before.”Anyone with information is urged to call the police at 781-595-2000.
