Lynn Jets fall to Latin Academy

March 4, 2011 by Matthew Roy

WATERTOWN – For 40 minutes on Thursday at Ryan Skating Arena, the Lynn Jets were in control of the play against Latin Academy in the Division 3 North first round. The problem for the Jets was that in the game’s opening five minutes, the Dragons had pushed their way in front. Ryan DeRosa scored twice in the first period as Latin held off the Jets, 3-1, to move on to a quarterfinal date with No. 2 seed Marblehead on Sunday (6) in Stoneham.”We are not a team that’s built to come back from multiple goal deficits,” Jets coach Joe Conlon said. “We didn’t come out and start well and I don’t know what that was.”The Jets’ (6-16-1) sluggish start proved to become very costly just 4:15 into the game as Ryan DeRosa banged home a Chris Kelly rebound to give the Dragons the lead.Less than three minutes later, DeRosa picked up a puck behind the Lynn net and banked a shot off Nick Comeau’s legs and in for a 2-0 lead at 7:06.Lynn finally began to get its legs as the period ticked along and nearly cut into the lead but John Finnigan was robbed by a diving stick save from Edward Meagher. The Jets then got a two-man advantage for 51 seconds and took advantage as Kyle Devin unloaded from the left point at 11:50 to make it 2-1 after a period.”Once we finally got our legs going, we were OK,” Conlon said. “But as a team we just didn’t start well.”The second period turned into a battle of the goaltenders as the Jets held a 12-8 shots on goal advantage but neither team was able to dent the scoreboard despite three power play opportunities. The Jets continued their control of the play in the third, getting two more power play chances, but could not convert, finishing an anemic 1-of-6 for the game.”We have to work to score every goal,” Conlon said. “We don’t have that one sniper so we have to get rebounds and it’s tough for us to get back into games when we’re down like we were.”The Jets would pull COmeau for an extra skater with 1:15 remaining but it was the Dragons who iced the game as Kelly took a Kevin Moran pass and put the puck in the vacated net with 23 seconds remaining.”It’s kind of disappointing,” Conlon said. “We didn’t capitalize on our opportunities and now we’re packing it up.”
