MIAA Hockey: Beverly ousts Winthrop

Cinderella lives in the Division 2 North tournament and she wears the colors of Beverly.The No. 7 seeded Panthers continued their spectacular season on Saturday at Stoneham Arena as Andrew Irving’s goal with 3:11 remaining was the difference in a 5-4 win over No. 2 Winthrop in front of a capacity crowd.Beverly moves on to play No. 6 Tewksbury on Tuesday (TBA) at the Chelmsford Forum in the semifinals.Beverly led 1-0 after a period on Andy Brown’s goal, assisted by Mitch Hamor and Irving. Winthrop tied the game early in the second on Joe Scarfo’s power play goal.The Vikings took the lead at 12:14 of the second when Scarfo scored on a delayed penalty. Beverly clawed back to tie the game with 1:08 left on Connor Irving’s rebound tally.Dan Eruzione gave the Vikings the lead once again at 1:18 of the third. Brenden Mitchell’s power play goal tied it before Mitch Hamor added another power play goal for a 4-3 lead. Jake Rand tied the game at 4-4 with 3:43 to go before the Panthers won it late.Malden Catholic 4, Central Catholic 3At Lawler Rink in North Andover, the Lancers broke a 2-2 tie with goals from Ryan Fitzgerald and Brendan Collier early in the third period to grab a win in their opening game of the Super Eight tournament.Saugus’ Mike Vecchione had three assists to tie former Catholic Memorial and BU star Mike Sylvia’s single season record for points in the Catholic Conference.
