sAUGUS – Those who lost their lives at the hands of domestic violence in 2010 were remembered at a somber vigil Sunday night at the First Congregational Church on Central Street.?We want to honor the victims and let people in the community know that there is hope available for victims of domestic violence,” said Katie Galenius, director of the Women?s Program at Greater Lynn Senior Services. In 2010, there were 30 domestic violence related homicides in Massachusetts. In the same year, Saugus Police Lt. Ronald Giorgetti said there were 55 domestic-violence complaints in town and a total of 198 restraining order requests regarding domestic cases.?In 2009, there were 22 (domestic violence murders), so the numbers are going the wrong way for sure,” Galenius said. “But we are working to bring awareness to domestic violence and also an end to domestic violence.”The event, sponsored by the Saugus Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the Saugus Clergy Association, included a skit played out by coalition members that depicted scenarios that victims of domestic violence often endure.Members also lit candles in honor of each victim and read a synopsis of their deaths.Included in those remembered, were Kimberly Nguyen, 35, and her sister, Lilly Nguyen, 29, both of Lynnfield. The two women were murdered in their home on Nov. 22 by Kimberly?s boyfriend, Joseph Cummings, who then killed himself. The couple had allegedly been arguing about the last name of their unborn child when Cummings shot her. Lilly, apparently hearing the gunfire, jumped from a second-floor window. As she lay on the lawn, Cummings shot her from a window, while Kimberly?s 12-year-old daughter hid inside the house.
