LYNN – Who murdered Florence McCullough? The answer to that question has stumped police for nearly 31 years as details remain slim and any possible witnesses remain mum.On June 11, 1980, the 63-year-old victim was found collapsed on the side porch of her 24 Fay St. home in the middle of the afternoon by her then-28-year-old neighbor, Eric Worth.?I remember it vividly. It was a sunny day, not much wind, pretty beautiful day,” Worth said. “I was sweeping the driveway (after mowing the lawn) and I heard a faint voice saying, ?He got me. He got me.?”Thinking the voices were coming from area kids playing a prank, Worth said he ran over to scold the kids, but instead found McCullough sliding down the side of a storm door, blood oozing from seven gunshot wounds to her chest and one to her back.?She didn?t respond to me and had red stains all over her blouse, so I ran over to get my father. By the time I came back, an ambulance had arrived and carried her away,” he said. “The whole thing was really weird.”Lynn Police Capt. Mark O?Toole, who is in the process of digging through a series of cold cases to uncover the truth, said there weren?t any signs of forced entry into the East Lynn home and it appears as if she knew her killer.?It?s perplexing, but likely that she was a target,” he said.McCullough?s house was found to be immaculate inside, her favorite soap opera still playing on TV, a glass of milk and some cookies on a nearby table and all doors to the house closed except for the side door on the porch. The only indication that something violent had occurred in the home were several .22 caliber shell casings found in the kitchen and living room and small blood stains on the carpet. A gun was never found.O?Toole said McCullough had recently been talking about getting a large settlement before her murder and that $350 had been stolen from a secret hiding place in her home on the day she died.Another piece to the puzzle is an unknown person who O?Toole said took a taxi ride to McCullough?s home that morning.?Detectives spoke to a dispatcher at a Lynn taxi company who said he sent one of his drivers to pick up a fare to go to 24 Fay St.,” he said. The driver, who was at the former Conti?s Cafe on Central Avenue when police interviewed her, said she remembered picking up a guy near the then-Disabled Veterans Hall on Stetson Avenue who was about 5-feet-10 inches tall, had brown hair, a rough-looking face and was carrying a bag and a satchel.?None of the neighbors saw the taxi,” O?Toole said. Her husband at the time, James McCullough, whom she had been married to for about a year, was home for lunch at noon that day and left at 2 p.m. for his job at General Electric?s River Works. After his wife?s death, James remarried but remained in the small home on the quiet suburban street. No one appeared to be at the home on Monday afternoon, although a car sat in the driveway.?I remember hearing rumors that her husband had done something or that her stepson attacked her, but nothing came of it,” Worth said. “It also seemed like he (James) got married pretty quickly after her death.”McCullough, a native of Lynn, attended city schools and graduated from English High in 1934. At the time of her death, she was a retired practical nurse, having worked in Lynn and Marblehead.Anyone with information regarding this cold case is urged to contact the police at 781-595-2000.
