PEABODY – A suspicious package scare Tuesday afternoon at the Christian Book Distributors on Summit Street turned out to be a harmless box of Titanium Dioxide, an additive used in paint and sunscreen.Police had received a 911 call for a suspicious package at the business and responded to the scene with fire crews. Employees of the store pointed out an 18 x 18 x 18 square box, containing an unknown white substance in two plastic containers, which originated from Little Rock, Ark.Crews cordoned off the area and contacted the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Disposal Unit. As a result, a Tier One hazmat response was declared because of the unknown nature of the substance and the business was evacuated.Around noon, the State Police Bomb Unit and the Regional Hazmat Team initiated an investigation of the substance, which included X-ray and testing of the substances and of the air quality in the area.At that point, hazmat teams determined that the substance was 96 percent Titanium Dioxide, which is an additive in its raw form used in paint and sunscreen. Crews said the substance can be slightly hazardous, with an exposure response being a cleanup with soap and water.A shipping error was later determined since the label did not match the material in the box and the delivery was made to the wrong location.”Thanks to the prompt notification and cooperation of the business owner, Ray Hendrickson and his employees, we were able to work together and bring this potentially hazardous situation to a quick and safe resolution” said Fire Chief Steve Pasdon.
