Matthew Roy

March 21, 2011 by Matthew Roy

For the third time in four years, Danvers’ Meghan Duggan and the Wisconsin women’s hockey team can call themselves national champions.A day after winning the Patty Kazmaier Award as the top player in women’s college hockey, Duggan helped lead the Badgers to a 4-1 win over Boston University to claim the school’s fourth national championship under Mark Johnson.Though she didn’t have a point on Sunday against the Terriers, Duggan finishes her stellar career with 237 points including 27 goals and 61 points during this season. On Sunday, the Badgers (37-2-2) completed a school record season in terms of wins by holding off the pesky Terriers despite having a 37-15 shots on goal advantage.Wisconsin led 1-0 after a period and then took a 2-0 lead in the second. BU battled back to cut the lead to a goal heading to the third. THe Badgers added an insurance goal with 3:27 remaining when Mallory Deluce scored on a rebound.Caroline Prevost’s empty net goal with 18.1 ticks remaining closed out the scoring.
