March 25, 2011 by Robin Kaminski

LYNN – The Beverly man who allegedly drove drunk and plowed into multiple cars on Route 1 south Wednesday was ordered held without bail at his arraignment on Thursday.Mateusz Chruscicki, 34, of 2 Duck Pond Road, #103, pleaded innocent in Lynn District Court on charges of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, two counts of leaving the scene of an accident causing property damage and a marked lanes violation.Judge Stacey Fortes-White ordered Chruscicki held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing on March 31.According to court documents, police received multiple 911 calls around 5:40 p.m., that a red Ford 350 truck had slammed into several cars on the roadway, leaving several victims with injuries. Upon arrival, police found a gray Toyota Camry in Lynnfield with heavy rear end damage and an elderly Everett couple injured inside. Both victims were taken to Union Hospital, where the woman was released after treatment, but the male victim was transferred to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston with serious chest injuries.Police then found a third victim in Saugus in a black Toyota Corolla. Chruscicki’s truck allegedly hit the victim’s vehicle with such force that it slammed into a guard rail in the passing lane and spun around twice before it came to a rest in the entrance of Papa Gino’s on Route 1. That victim, from New Hampshire, opted to seek his own treatment.Chruscicki then continued on his alleged drunken path by slamming into a gray Chevy sedan driven by a 61-year-old Lynn woman that was pushed into the parking lot of a car wash just before Prince Pizza. She was not injured.Immediately after that collision, Chruscicki crashed into a telephone pole in front of Prince Pizza, totaling his truck. He was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for treatment of his injuries.Police arrested him at the hospital around 7 p.m., where Chruscicki allegedly said he had seven vodka cocktails at his home and he caused the accidents because he wanted to hurt himself. He went on to say that he didn’t have any money to pay his bills and was depressed, but didn’t mean to hurt the victims, just himself, and that he would have to choose a better weapon to kill himself with next time.
