Lynn man indicted for rape; remains free

SALEM – A Lynn man who is facing a 20-year state prison sentence after being accused of raping a 62-year-old woman inside a Hamley Street home was indicted Wednesday afternoon by an Essex County grand jury.Steven Konyaki, 30, of 11 Hamley St., stands charged with rape stemming from an incident at his home last November.The victim, age 62, told authorities that on Nov. 4 she was visiting a female at the home when she was allegedly raped by Konyaki in a bedroom.Konyaki reportedly made a statement to a witness that he thought he had had sex with a 16 year old, according to reports.The indictment handed up now moves the case from Lynn District Court, where Konyaki has pleaded innocent, to Salem Superior Court, where he will be re-arraigned within a few weeks.In the meantime, Konyaki remains free on bail.Assistant District Attorney Jean M. Curran is assigned to prosecute the case for the state.
