Bishop Fenwick softball wins in 10 innings

Twice on Friday, the Bishop Fenwick softball team fought back from behind against Arlington Catholic before Meredith Ross’ walk off single in the bottom of the 10th plated Kim Shinnick with the game winning run in a 4-3 victory.”It was a great game by both teams,” Fenwick coach Paul Lyman said. “AC is a good team.”Fenwick (2-0) fought back from a two run deficit in the eighth to tie the game at 3-3 before Shinnick led off the 10th with a single and wound up at third with one out. Ross then slapped a single to left to send the Crusaders off victorious.Taylor Ahearn was brilliant in the circle to get the win, going all 10 innings with eight strikeouts and two walks.In other action, Everett beat Marblehead, 13-3.BASEBALLSt. Mary’s 16, Beverly 8At Cooney Field in Beverly, the Spartans (2-0) saw a 10-1 lead get shaved to 10-7 in the fifth before a six-run sixth inning put the game away for St. Mary’s.Nick Day led the hit parade for St. Mary’s, going 3-for-4 with four RBI, while Matt Turmenne was 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBI. Zach Conti went 2-for-5 with two RBI and Alex Fiste had two hits and drove home a run.”Beverly just wouldn’t go away,” St. Mary’s coach Derek Dana said. “But I liked the way the kids bounced back after the fifth inning.”Kurtis White went 4 2/3 innings to get the win. Sean Buckland and Matt Turmenne came on in relief to close things out.BOYS LACROSSEMinuteman 16, Tech 7At Lexington, Tom Constantine and Jeremy Quinton each had a hat trick while goatender Scott Crooker had 20 stops as the Tigers (2-2) fell on the road to the Mustangs.Cambridge 5, Lynn 1At Manning Field, Jared Chen scored in the fourth quarter but the hosts were unable to dig out of a 4-0 hole despite a brilliant game from goaltender Riley McManus and the Lynn defense.No. Andover 7, Marblehead 1At North Andover, the Magicians (1-1) struggled on offense most of the way as they managed only a lone goal from Brian Gellert in the first quarter.GIRLS LACROSSEFenwick 20, Danvers 11At Donaldson Field in Peabody, Becca Graves had seven goals while Anna Moulton, Grace Celona and Annette Ruggiero each had four as the Crusaders (2-1) blew past the Falcons. Lauren Moulton also had a goal.BOYS TENNISWinthrop 3, St. Mary’s 2At Winthrop, the Spartans (0-1) got wins from Dennis Bertucchi in second singles and Christian Blaise-John Shea in second doubles, but came up just short.Danvers 4, Fenwick 1At Peabody, the Falcons (2-0) got 6-0, 6-0 wins from Gabe Ochanski at first singles and Nick Lischenok in second singles and wins from Mike Desantis-Jim Grace and Mike Olszak-Dan Gagnon in the doubles matches.Marblehead 3, Manchester-Essex 2At Manchester, the Magicians (1-0) swept the doubles with Ryan Dempsey-Dylan White and Sean and Peter Jackson doing the honors. Chris Wigglesworth added the other point with a 6-0, 6-0 win at third singles.GIRLS TENNISSt. Mary’s 4, Winthrop 1At GE Field in Lynn, the Spartans (2-0) got wins from Meghan Fitzgerald at first singles; Carina Pinto, second singles; Kelsey Barrasso-Lauren Carifio, first doubles and Nicole Ferrari-Kat Troisi in second doubles.BOYS TRACKWilliams 88, St. Mary’s 43At Braintree, Andrew DiMaiti was a triple winner, taking the 400 hurdles (1:03.1); 800 (2:21) and triple jump (34-3). Also grabbing wins were Joe Chau in the shotput (32-0); Pat Hogan, discus (91-1) and Jameson Wadman, javelin (133-0).GIRLS TRACKWilliams 75, St. Mary’s 53At Braintree, the Spartans (0-1) got wins from Melissa LeFave in the 2-mile (14:36); Brianna Anderson, 100 (13.6); Carol DiMaiti, 200 (29.2); Abby Caggiano, javelin (55-4); Zuzu Haefner, high jump (4-6) and the 4×100 (57.8) and 4×400 relays (5:10).
