Softball: St. Mary’s opens season with road win over Spellman

The defending Division 3 state champs had to wait until Monday to get their season and title defense started, but the wait proved to be worth it for the St. Mary’s softball team.Shelbi Wilson held Cardinal Spellman to two runs on five hits while striking out six as the Spartans left Brockton with a hard-fought 4-2 win over the Cardinals.”It was kind of a back and forth game,” St. Mary’s coach Colleen Newbury said.The Spartans had seen two games last week postponed due to foul weather, but didn’t show any signs of rust as Ariel LaRosa was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Genevieve Benoit went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Shortstop Allison Butler was outstanding in the field, turning a pair of unassisted double plays.Saugus 4, Everett 1At Saugus, Nichole Lowe struck out seven, walked one and allowed only three hits as the Sachems (1-0) opened with an impressive performance against the Crimson Tide.Amanda DiCenzo was the hitting hero for the Sachems, going 3-for-3 with a 2-run single in the third inning. Jackie Doherty and Rachel Forgione also had hits for Saugus.Marblehead 14, Gloucester 5At Marblehead, Rachel Gross had a pair of doubles and drove home five runs as the Magicians (1-1) rolled to an easy win. Olivia Venner was 3-for-4 with an RBI while Emmy York had three hits and drove in a run and Lucia Chalek had two hits and an RBI.Sarah Hastings picked up the win, going six innings with four strikeouts.Winthrop 13, Cambridge 7At Danehy Park in Cambridge, Winthrop pitcher Alex Ferri fanned 16 batters to help the Vikings to a win in their season opener. Ferri allowed four hits, seven runs (6 earned). Winthrop had the bats cranking with Liana Ferullo going 3-for-4 with two runs and a walk; Andrea Martucci (4-for-5, double, RBI, 2 steals); and Taylor Brown, 2-for-5 including a home run and a triple. The homer was a three-run shot. Winthrop (1-0) had 13 hits.Medford 10, Revere 5At Medford, it was a 2-2 game into the fourth when the Mustangs took advantage of a bevy of walks to score seven runs. Catcher Lindsay Gurska had two hits for Revere (0-1).Chelsea 19, Tech 9At Lynn, Rallanny Diaz went 3-for-5, scored two runs and had three RBI for the Tigers (0-1). Tori Park went 2-for-5 with three RBI and Diana Damian went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and RBI. Park took the loss. Shortstop Ryce Colon turned a nice double play in the fifth inning.
