Walk-off hits are a rare thing but a walk-off grand slam is about as rare as a double eagle on the golf course.On Monday, Saugus’ Jackie Doherty got softball’s version of the albatross as her grand slam in the bottom of the eighth capped a five run rally and gave the Sachems a 6-2 win over Swampscott.”It was a really great game,” Saugus coach Bobbie Finnocchio said. “Both teams played great.”Doherty’s heroics came after her team entered the bottom of the eighth down 2-1.Nichole Lowe reached to lead things off. Stefanie Terrazzano followed with a hit and Melissa Toomey doubled home Lowe to tie the game. Rachel Forgione followed with a walk to load the bases before Doherty unloaded them with one swing to give her team the win.Lowe got the win on the mound, striking out 10 and allowing only four hits.St. Mary’s 9, Arl. Cath. 8 (8 innings)At Grace Rogato Field, the Spartans (3-0) needed to go extra innings for a second time in three days as Brianna Holmes scored on a throwing error to cap a wild affair.”It was a great game,” St. Mary’s coach Colleen Newbury said. “It was kind of a surprise with the way that the pitchers can throw.”The Cougars had a 4-1 lead after two before St. Mary’s scored six times in the third. AC tied the game in the fifth and again in the seventh to force extra innings.Brooke L’Abbe was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Sabrina Iannetti was 3-for-5 with an RBI.Peabody and English saw their game wiped out because of poor field conditions at Keaney Park. Kiley Fischer had five goals and five assists for Marblehead while Olivia Raisner also scored five times.Meggie Collins had a hat trick and Tyler Phillips added a pair. Sarah Noyes and Courtney Maag also found the back of the net for Marblehead.
