April 21, 2011 by Matthew Roy

The Marblehead baseball team has turned into one of the pleasant early season surprises on the North Shore this season. On Wednesday, the Magicians picked up their fourth win in five games as they scored a 3-2 win in 11 innings over Danvers.”Both teams came ready to play and it was one of the best games I’ve ever been involved in,” Marblehead coach Jason Tarasuik said. “Both of us competed at a high level. It was a fun day to be at the ballpark.”Marblehead (4-1, 3-1 Northeastern Conference/South) had the lead most of the way until Danvers’ (4-1) Zach Ryan tied the game with a two out, two run single in the top of the seventh to make it 2-2.The bullpens kept things tied until the 11th when Dan Colbert led the home half off with a single. He stole second and then came around to score the winning run on a pair of passed balls.”Usually it comes down to something screwy in a game like this,” Tarasuik said. “We put pressure on the other team and it worked out our way.”Starting pitchers Ryan Stanojev of Marblehead and Danvers’ Scott Hovey were outstanding. Stanojev surrendered only three hits and struck out eight over six innings while Hovey struck out seven and allowed four hits in 7.1 innings.”Danvers is so well coached and they compete hard,” Tarasuik said. “I am so proud of my team for battling like they did.”Peabody 11, Salem 3At Palmer Cove in Salem, the Tanners (2-3, 2-1 NEC North) spotted Salem a 2-0 lead on Raphy Medrano’s base hit before breaking out the aluminum.Casey Grenier led the attack for Peabody, going 4-for-4 with three RBI and two stolen bases. Matt McIsaac was 4-for-5 with three RBI and George Tsonis went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two stolen bases.Nick Allen went the route on the hill, needing only 80 pitches to hold the Witches to just eight hits.uRain did a number on the schedule, with the Swampscott-Winthrop, Saugus-Gloucester and Classical-Beverly games moved today.
