April 27, 2011 by Robin Kaminski

LYNN – A Lynn gang member is behind bars after he allegedly opened fire on two people Saturday following a drug deal gone bad.The suspect, Manases E. Beato, 32, of 20 Oakland St., was charged with two counts of armed assault to murder, illegal possession of ammunition, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building and larceny over $250. He was arraigned Monday at Lynn District Court by Judge Albert Conlon and ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing on May 2.According to court documents, the two Lynn victims flagged down an officer in the area of Essex Street, saying they had just been shot at on Williams Avenue by a Hispanic man they know as “DJ.” One of the victims said the suspect, later identified as Beato, shot at them from a second floor window following an attempt to sell him a laptop computer, cellular phone and a half-gram of heroin. Beato, who is an alleged Latin Kings gang member, took a look at the items and went back inside the Williams Avenue apartment for about 20 minutes. The victim said she called Beato, but after he didn?t answer, she alleged that Beato fired three gunshots at them from a window. Police set up a perimeter around the house and searched the apartment in question, where Beato was found hiding in a closet, inside the bedroom of a 12-year-old girl.Witnesses in the building say they heard a heated argument and a few minutes after, heard three gunshots. Police later found a shell casing two feet away from a bedroom window, along with a window curtain with a bullet hole in it. A live round was also found in a plastic tote in the same bedroom. The firearm and laptop were not recovered, but the cellular phone was found on a bed.
