Baseball: Swampscott stays white-hot in beating Beverly

Since beginning the season 0-3, the Swampscott baseball team has been as hot as any team in the Northeastern Conference.On Wednesday, Sean O’Brien retired the last 14 batters he faced and held a potent Beverly lineup to only three hits as the Big Blue rattled off six unanswered runs to snare a 6-3 win, their fifth straight victory.”Sean is up to the task day in and day out,” Swampscott coach T.J. Baril said. “He buckled down and picked up the team in the last innings.”Beverly (5-3) took a 3-0 lead in the third on Andy Brown’s single and an error that scored two runs. Swampscott clawed back to tie the game in the fourth and then broke the tie for good on Justin Perry’s 2-run bomb in the fifth.A.J. Baker drove home two runs while Robert Faia had two runs scored.Swampscott returns to action today (4) when it travels to Peabody.St. Mary’s 9, Williams 3At Braintree, a four-run sixth inning helped break the game open as the Spartans (7-0, 5-0 Catholic Central League/Large) stayed unbeaten.Jonathan Capano had three RBI while Zach Paone stole three bases and scored three times. Kurtis White got the win on the mound, going the first 5 1/3 innings before handing over to Matt Turmenne.Danvers 8, English 3At Twi Field in Danvers, the Falcons (8-1, 5-1 NEC South) got two hits and two RBI from Dan Connors and 4 1/3 innings of two-hit ball from starter Ray Arocho.Nick Gikas and A.J. Couto also had two hits for Danvers. The Bulldogs (3-4, 3-3 NEC North) got RBI from Josh Gonzalez, Drew Gentile and Junior Santos.Salem 3, Saugus 1At World Series Park in Saugus, Dan Dobrielski’s sacrifice fly broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth before Cody Mercier added a solo homer for an insurance run in the seventh for the 3-4 Witches.Chris Boucher scattered nine hits in going the distance to pick up the win.Winthrop 13, Peabody 1At Winthrop, the Tanners (4-4, 3-2 NEC North) had a 1-0 lead through four innings before the wheels fell off the wagon.”We let them stay in the game and we got bit by the big hit,” Peabody coach Mark Bettencourt said.Wes Sanders, Ramses Vittini and Casey Grenier each had a hit as the Peabody offense was shut down all day.St. John’s 4, BC High 3At Danvers, Ryan Pantaleo needed only 68 pitches to hold the visitors to one earned run while the Prep scored three times in the fourth to take the lead for good.Justin Peluso was 2-for-3 with a triple, RBI and run scored. Rory Garrison and Sean Patrikas also drove home runs.Fenwick 3, Triton 2At Byfield, the Crusaders (6-1) scored three unearned runs and then had to survive as the hosts loaded the bases in the seventh but couldn’t get the tying run across.
