Tennis: Marblehead girls defeat Swampscott

On Wednesday, the Marblehead and Swampscott girls tennis teams tangled on the courts. After long matches, Marblehead walked away with a 4-1 victory.Winning for Marblehead (2-0) in the clash of rivals was Ashley Noyes, first singles (6-0, 6-0) over Kelsey O’Brien; Mary Lindsay Ryan, third singles (7-5, 6-4 over Shannon Ton); Annie Ryan-Lindsey Cohen, first doubles (1-6, 6-3, 7-5) over Francesca Pelletier-Tatum Pederson, and Megan Stanojev-Meghan Gabel, second doubles (6-3, 7-6(7-2)) over Alna Dolan-Danica Villanueva.For Swampscott (1-2, 1-1), Rita Tsokanis won in second singles, 6-3, 6-1.Classical 5, English 0At English, the Rams completed their total victory when Amy O’Brien won her third set tiebreaker in second singles, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6. The match lasted three hours. Also winning for Classical (5-0) were Saska Icitovic, first singles (6-4, 6-1); Amanda Pearson, third singles (6-2, 6-1); Sheba Neak and Stella Athanasopoulos, first doubles (6-4, 6-2); Ashley Ellis and Wendy Matanganyidze, second doubles (6-1, 6-0).Fenwick 4, Spellman 1At Peabody, the Crusaders (5-0) got wins from Megan McCarthy, first singles (6-0, 6-0); Emily Dunham, second singles (6-0, 6-2); Sarah Green, third singles (6-2, 6-1); Demi Velonis and Meredith Maguire, first doubles (6-2, 6-1).Saugus 3, Winthrop 2At Winthrop, the Sachems (3-1) got wins from Lisa Belyea, second singles (6-7, 6-0, 6-1); Amanda Terrazzano and Breana Evans, first doubles (6-1, 6-1); Tayla Corrado and Alex Thanopoulos, second doubles (6-3, 6-3).Austin Prep 3, St. Mary’s 2At North Reading, Carina Pinto won in second singles (7-6, 7-5) and Kat Troisi won in third singles (6-1, 7-6) for St. Mary’s (4-2). Gonzalez won in third singles, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.Gloucester 5, English 0At Gloucester, English’s Kerlay Der put up a good fight at second singles before losing, 3-6, 3-6.Spellman 4, Fenwick 1At Brockton, Zack Mutti and Joshua Burazio won first doubles for Fenwick, 7-5, 7-6.Austin Prep 5, St. Mary’s 0At North Reading, the Spartans lost a tough one on the road.
