Tennis: English outlasts Classical for first win

It came down to the very end but the Lynn English boys tennis team picked up its first victory of the season on Friday as Kerlay Der beat Classical’s Narith Say, 6-4, 7-6 in second singles to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 win.”It was a very good match,” English coach Kerry King said. “It was well played and fortunately we won those one or two points that let us come out on top.”The Rams (0-6) won the other two singles matches as Seng Ly defeated Badril Prihantono, 6-4, 6-1, in first singles and Nick Gonzalez was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Joe Polonia at third singles.English (1-3) swept the doubles as Leo Barrios-Kevin Em beat Philip Chea-Rene Perez, 7-6, 6-3 at first doubles and Shivam Patel-Diego Vasquez downed Jimson Tach-Freddie Hincapie, 6-3, 6-1.Fenwick 3, St. Mary’s 2At Peabody, the Crusaders (1-6) swept the doubles by wining a pair of three setters to get past the Spartans. Kevin Ngo won 6-2, 6-0 at first singles; Zach Mutti-Brendan Burns won 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 at first doubles and Alex Camero-Joe Dorazio won 6-0 in the third set to get the point in second doubles.St. Mary’s wins came from Dennis Bertocchi at second singles (6-1, 6-0) and Pat Barceleau in third singles (6-7, 7-5, 6-2).Mal. Cath. 3, Danvers 2At Danvers, Nick Lischenok won for the ninth time in nine matches at first singles with 6-2, 6-2 win. The other point for the Falcons (6-3) came with a 6-2, 6-1 win by Gabe Ochonski at second signles.GIRLS TENNISFenwick 3, St. Mary’s 2At GE Field, it came down to the second singles match where Fenwick’s Emily Dunham picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win to get the decisive point. The Crusaders’ (6-0) other wins came from Meghan McCarthy in first singles (6-2, 6-3) and Jessica Griffin at third singles (6-4, 6-2).The Spartans (4-3) swept the doubles with Lauren Carifio-Kelsey Barrasso (6-1, 7-6) and Nicole Ferrari and Patti-Ann Doucette (6-4, 6-4) doing the honors.Lynnfield 5, Pentucket 0At Pentucket, it was a closer match than the score indicated as all three singles matches went nearly two hours.Julia Broding won 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 at first singles; Tori Copelas won 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 at second singles and Ava Grava won 7-5, 6-2 in third singles. Marlee McCarthy-Danielle Soden won 6-3, 6-0 at first doubles and Karen Kelter-Jordan Miller took a 6-2, 6-1 win at second doubles.Peabody 5, Gloucester 0At Peabody, the Tanners (4-1) dropped only one set en route to the easy win. Alaina Warren was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at first singles; Sarah Athas, 6-0, 6-2 in second singles; Jamie Donahue, 6-1, 6-2 at third singles; Kayli Lohman-Rachel Gillis, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in first doubles and Erica Reeves-Michelle McCarthy, 6-2, 6-2 at second doubles.
