Stellar efforts by freshman twins Andrew and Carol DiMaiti powered the St. Mary’s boys and girls track teams to third- and fourth-place finishes, respectively, in Saturday’s Catholic Central League Freshman-Sophomore Meet at Archbishop Williams.Andrew qualified for the State Meet with his 58.8 win in the 400 hurdles, won the 800 in a time of 2:09.9 and finished third in the triple jump (35-6.5). St. Mary’s boys finished third with 61 points. Carol won the 100 (12.7), placed third in the triple jump (27-10) and finished sixth in the 200 (28.8) to help the Spartans girls lock down fourth place with 43.5 points.”We’ve traditionally been a very small team but the numbers have been building over the last two years. To finish third and fourth in this meet is very encouraging. The DiMaitis were both very strong,” said coach Heather Woods.They weren’t alone.Marvin Bony also scored in multiple events for the boys, qualifying for the State Meet with second-place finishes in both the 100 (11.7) and 200 (24.2). Rodolfo Jiminez (javelin, 114-3), seventh-grader Thomas Mackin (two-mile, 14:04) and seventh-grader Edwin Bradbury (400 hurdles, 80.0) all finished third.For the girls, Zuzu Haefner won the high jump (4-10) and qualified for the States with a second-place effort of 15-5.5 in the long jump. Chandler Cappozzi ran third in the 800 (2:43) and fifth in the mile (5:52) while Melissa LaFave was second in the two-mile (14:16.9), Kennedy Boy was fifth in the shot put (23-3) and Madelyn Troisi placed sixth in the 400 hurdles (90.3).
