Track: Marblehead girls win NEC

The Marblehead High girls track team won the 4×400 relay to pull out an exciting 73-63 win over Danvers Monday. In the process, the Magicians clinched the Northeastern Conference title.The Marblehead team’s motto is “get it to the relay” and that’s just what they did, according to coach Mike Toomey. Madeline Piela, Paige Ferrucci, Courtney Maher and Maura Tubridy got the job done, making the third time this season that the Magicians have pulled out a win thanks to the relay.The other Marblehead winners were Emma McGuirk in the 100 and 200 meters, Tubridy in the 400, Alex Gerard in the two-mile, Chloe Heskett in the 400 hurdles, Piela, in the mile, Maher, the 800 and Kelly Roland, the high jump.Fenwick 83, St. Mary’s 35Fenwick 103, Cathedral 7At Manning Field, the Crusaders (7-1) had wins from Jessica Patnaude, 200 (27.6, state qualifying time); Emily LaRochelle, 100 hurdles (18.6); Faye Haley, 400 (64.2); Haley Mahan, 800 (3:09), and Tina Moran, the shot put and discus.The St. Mary’s (3-3) winners were Zuzu Haefner in the 800 (2:54.2), long jump (15-1/2); and the high jump (4-11). Brianna Anderson won the 100 (12.9) and Brittany Lydon, Haefner, Chandler Cappozzi and Melissa LeFave won the 4×400 relay (5:11).Beverly 72, Swampscott 64At Swampscott, the Big Blue had wins from Nancy Do in the long jump (16-1); Melinda Wilson, the discus (96-9) and 200 meters; Tara Smith-Matthews, shot put (29 1/2); Danielle Goldman, javelin (97-6) and Vy Le, 100 high hurdles (16.8). Swampscott also won the 4 x 100 relay.BOYS TRACKFenwick 95, St. Mary’s 23Fenwick 99, Cathedral 18At Manning Field, the Crusaders (7-1) picked up wins from Chris Poirier, 110 hurdles (18.2); Brian Blaisdell, 400 hurdles (70.7); Dan Deschenes, 400 (54.5); Joe O’Brien, mile (5:12); Zach Nardone, shot put (49-6) and the discus (125-2). Fenwick also won the 4×400 relay with Angelo Maida, Dan DeLomba, Matt Malone and Joe O’Brien.Swampscott 97, Beverly 39At Swampscott, the Big Blue (4-1) got the job done with wins from Jermaine Kelly, high hurdles (14.9), javelin (152 feet); Peter Hale, two-mile (10:40); Nick Hartmann, mile (4:51); Declan McClung, 400 (54.8); Ryan Kelley, 800 meters (2:10); Jake Conaty, long jump (38-6) and Bernard Dell, long jump (19-6).Marblehead 119, Danvers 17At Marblehead, Nolan Raimo was a quadruple winner for the Magicians (6-0), taking the 110 hurdles (14.9), 200 (22.8), triple jump (40-11) and long jump (19-11).Also winning were Greg Worth in the javelin (158-11); Dan Plunkett, discus (134-0); Chris Neumann, 800 (2:05); Jake Smith, hurdles (1:01.4); Henry Pratt, mile (4:47) and James Wigglesworth, 2-mile (10:28).NEC FRESH-SOPHOMORE MEETAt Manning Field Saturday, Peabody easily outdistanced the competition to win the Northeastern Conference boys freshman/sophomore meet on Saturday at Manning Field. The Tanners had a team total of 107 points, beating second place Danvers by 38 points.The event winners were as follows: High jump, Andrew Poveromo, Beverly (5-6); Long jump – Alex Ortega, English (18-11); Triple jump – Josh Beloff, Marblehead (39-8); Shot put – Joe Manson, Danvers (44-10 1/2); Javelin – Jalen Brown, Classical (140-11); 110 Hurdles – Phil Cherner, Swampscott (17.4); 400 hurdles – Tommy Drover, Peabody (1:01.7); 100 – Chris Cennami, Peabody (11.8); 200 – Ortega (23.5); 400 – Declan McClung, Swampscott (55.3); 800 – Nate Fowler, Marblehead (2:05.8); Mile – Kevin Powers, Saugus (4:53.0); 2-mile – Peter Hale, Swampscott (10:08.4); Discus – Steve Sam, Classical (99-7).In the girls competition, Swampscott rolled to a convincing win with 122 points, well ahead of second place Beverly.The winners were as follows: High jump – Celina Variam, Marblehead (4-10); Long jump – Nancy Do, Swampscott (16-8 1/2); Triple jump – Haley Irwin, Swampscott (32-10 1/2); Shot put – Pam Zabala, Peabody (34-2); Discus – Melinda Wilson, Swampscott (100-0); 100 hurdles – Vy Le, Swampscott (16.9); 400 hurdles – Kristen O’Connor, Beverly (1:10.5); 100 – Do (13.2); 200 – Xa
