Baseball: St. Mary’s overcomes slow start against Central Catholic

The St. Mary’s baseball team dug itself a five-run deficit early on, but the Spartans never quit and defeated Central Catholic 10-6 in an emphatic comeback Tuesday night at Central Catholic.St. Mary’s coach Derek Dana was very excited with his team’s performance.”My team never quit. We didn’t have the ideal start we pictured, but my team never quit and really earned a great win today,” Dana said.The Spartans were down 6-1 after four innings. St. Mary’s had a three-run fifth (making it 6-4) keyed by a two-run double from Matt Turmenne and an RBI single from Zach Conti. The Spartans then had a two-run sixth (making it 6-6) keyed by a two-run home run by Nick Day. St. Mary’s had a four-run seventh inning to help close out the game. Leading the way for the St. Mary’s offense was Zach Paone (4-5, 1 RBI) and Day (triple, 2 run home run, 3 RBI). Pitcher Sean Buckland had a tough first inning, but only gave up three hits after the first (7 innings, 7 hits, 6 runs, 2 earned runs, 2 walks, 5 strikeouts). St. Mary’s (9-2) plays Arlington Catholic Wednesday.Lynnfield 9, Georgetown 3At Georgetown, the Pioneers found themselves down 1-0 after four innings. Lynnfield had a seven-run explosion in the fifth inning and never looked back. Pitcher Joe Satorelli recorded his fourth victory of the season (7 innings, 8 hits, 4 strikeouts, 1 walk, 3 runs). Leading the way for the Lynnfield attack was Chris Klotzbier (2-3, 3 RBI). Pete Franchi also helped out (2 hits, 2 SB, 2 RBI). Rick Berardino had a strong day at the plate as well (2 hits, 2 SB). Lynnfield (8-3) plays Rockport Thursday.Minuteman 6, Tech 4At Minuteman, Tech pitcher Feldrys Reyes had a strong day on the mound (5 innings, 3 unearned runs). Joey Martinez had a strong day at the plate (triple, 1 RBI). Elvis Aquino, Euris Rojas and Francisco Santos all had good performances at the dish as well. Tech plays Greater Lowell Wednesday.Salem 6, Gloucester 3At Salem State, Salem pitcher Chris Boucher threw a near no-hitter in a monster performance. Boucher had his no-hitter broken up in the fifth inning (7 innings, 3 hits, 3 unearned runs, 4 walks, 2 strikeouts). Leading the way for the Salem offense was Emilio Bereato (2-3, triple, 4 RBI). Dan Dobrosielski had a strong day at the dish (2-4). Teaghan Malionek had a strong performance as well (2-2, 2 RBI). Salem is now 6-6.
