School roundup: Saugus and Classical split in track

The Saugus High boys track team won the relay to pull out a dramatic 68-67 win over Classical Wednesday at Saugus. The girls meet was just as exciting with the Classical girls winning a thriller, 69-65.Jimmy Harrington, Kevin Powers, Evan Covell and Logan Nichols combined forces in the relay to win with a time of 4:02. Saugus also had wins from Steven Essery, low hurdles (67.8) and high hurdles (17.3); David Cacciola, 100 (11.3) and the 400 (55.8); Kevin Powers, mile (4:51); Harrington, 800 (2:22); Ryan Kennedy, shot put (37-11) and Marco Ferrara, the javelin (151-10). Saugus is 2-3.Classical had wins from Steve Sam, discus (111 feet); Felipe Garcia, long jump (19-6), triple jump (41-5) and 300 (24.1); Perry Raymond, 2-mile (11:18); and George Clark, the high jump (5-4).Jalen Brown had a second in the javelin and third in 200 and discus. Dammy Dada took second in the triple jump with a state qualifying mark of 40-6. He also took second in the 110 hurdles and third in the long jump and 200.Revere 114, English 32At Manning Field, the Bulldogs (1-4) had wins from Melvin Tavares in the 100 (10.8), Fausto Beato, the 200 (23.5) and the 4×100 relay (45.8) that included Tavares, Beato, Tizzy Boyles and Caleb Michel.GIRLS TRACKClassical 69, Saugus 65At Saugus, the Rams (2-3) had winning performances from Carla Altema, 100 hurdles (18.3); Rebecca Potter, 200 (28.3); Tashanna Brown, javelin (98 feet); Hulerie McGuffie, triple jump (30-10) and 400 (59.7), and the 4×100 relay (53.0) with McGuffie, Potter, Brown and Saffie Bangura.Saugus had wins from Ashley Zeboski, 400 hurdles (73.6); Nicole Lynch, two-mile (14:19); Ashley Aldred, 100 (12.6) and long jump (15-4); Casey Hyde, mile (6:23); Mary Dixon, shot put (28-3) and Carissa Contreras, discus (71-11).Revere 92, English 39At Manning Field, Shakira Llewellyn won two events and anchored the winning 4×100 relay team for English. Llewellyn won the 100 (12.9) and discus (70-2). Also winning for the Bulldogs (1-4) was Carla Ross in the mile (6:41).The winning time in the 4×100 relay was 54.3 and was run by Leah Hall, Maria Arzu, Brianna Vaughan, and Llewellyn.BOYS LACROSSENashoba 12, Tech 6At Lynn, Jeremy Quinton scored three goals and added an assist for the Tigers. Also for Tech (4-12), Jason Grant scored two goals and had three assists and Kyle Gagnon recorded a goal.Click here for a photo gallery.In between the pipes for Tech, Scott Crooker made 14 saves in a game where the Tigers played solid defense. Nashoba goals on fast breaks proved to be the undoing of Tech.GIRLS LACROSSESwampscott 15, Gloucester 14At Gloucester, a scoring contest broke out and the Big Blue were able to win their second game of the season. For Swampscott (2-11) Maggie Osbahr scored four goals while Lisa Gambale and Katie Zarinsky each notched three. Kita Wheeler added two goals in the win, while Taylor Eaton, Bridget Lawless, and Jesse DePaolo all tallied one goal.Prior to the win, Swampscott had lost four straight games by one goal.”It is nice to finally be on the winning end of a one-goal game,” said Swampscott coach Paula Donnelly.Marblehead 10, Beverly 6At Marblehead, the Magicians submitted another solid performance en route to their eighth win of the season. For Marblehead (8-3-1), both Kiley Fischer and Olivia Raisner scored three goals while Meggie Collins netted two. Hayley Braun and Maika Phillips each scored a goal.In net for Marblehead, Kelly Collins made seven saves.”We are going to continue to play with poise and composure and try to learn from every game,” said Marblehead coach Annie Pugh.Fenwick 24, Matignon 10At Peabody, the Crusaders quite simply hung a big number on their visitors. In the win, Becca Graves scored eight goals, Annette Ruggiero scored six, and Grace Celona scored five. Fenwick (13-1) built a 17-7 lead by halftime and cruised to the win in the second half.Peabody 14, Salem 6At Peabody, Katie Teixeira and Brittany Lefave both scored four goals to lead the Tanners to a home victory.
