Tennis Roundup: Classical girls qualify for tournament

For just the third time in team history, the Classical girls tennis team is headed to the state tournament after blanking Revere, 5-0, at Breed on Wednesday. This is also the first time in team history the Rams have qualified for the tourney in consecutive years.”The team is very excited about qualifying for the tournament,” said Classical coach Cathy Ellis. “We have worked very hard this season.”Leading the charge for Classical (5-0) was Saska Icitovic, winning in first singles 6-0, 6-0. Also winning for the Rams were Amy O’Brien, second singles (6-3, 6-2); Amanda Pearson, third singles (6-2, 6-2); Sheba Neak and Stella Athanasopoulos, first doubles (6-0, 6-1); and Ashley Ellis and Wendy Matanganyidze, second doubles (6-1, 6-0).Saugus 4, English 1At Saugus, all three singles matches went three sets and all went to the Sachems. Winning for Saugus (4-3) were Taryn Medeiros, first singles (5-7, 7-5, 6-4); Lisa Belyea, second singles (7-6 (7-5), 3-6. 7-5); Olivia Singer, third singles (6-3, 2-6, 6-1); and Amanda Terrazzano and Briana Evans, first doubles (6-2, 6-1).Marblehead 5, Gloucester 0At Gloucester, the Magicians (6-1) had wins from Julia Burke, first singles (6-4, 6-1); Mary Lindsay Ryan, second singles (6-0, 6-2); Sarah Katz, third singles (6-1, 6-2); Annie Ryan and Lindsey Cohen, first doubles (6-1, 6-1); and Megan Stanojev and Kelsey Davis, second doubles (6-1, 6-0).St. Mary’s 5, Matignon 0At Belmont Hill, the Spartans improved to 8-3 with wins from Megan Fitzgerald, 6-0, 6-0, at first singles; Corina Pinto, second singles, 6-0, 6-0; Kat Troisi, third singles, 6-0, 6-3; Kelsey Barrasso-Emily Hatchouel, first doubles, 6-1, 6-0, and Nicole Ferrari and Patti-Ann Doucette, 6-1, 6-0, in second doubles.BOYS TENNISSt. Mary’s 4, Classical 1At GE Field, the Spartans grabbed a victory on a wet Wednesday afternoon. Winning for the Spartans (3-5) were Dennis Bertocchi, second singles (6-2, 6-2); Grant McKinnon, third singles (6-7, 6-1, 6-0); Dave Deschenes and Pat Barceleau, first doubles (3-6, 6-0, 6-0); Chris Blaise and John Shea, second doubles (4-6, 7-5, 8-6).For Classical (0-7), Seng Ly won in first singles, 6-1, 6-1.Swampscott 3, Beverly 2At Swampscott, the Big Blue extended their record on the season to 6-2. Winning for Swampscott were Matt Jacobs, first singles (6-0, 6-1); Val Temin, second singles (6-2, 6-2); and Josh Lunder and Sam Crimmins, first doubles (6-1, 6-0).For Beverly, Adam Capodilupo won in third singles (6-4, 6-2) and Connor Sullivan and Justin Brewster won in second doubles (6-0, 6-3).Revere 5, English 0At Winthrop, Malak Mossaveck won in first singles, 6-1, 6-0, to lead Revere over the visiting Bulldogs.Also winning for Revere (4-4) were Mlaven Pepic, second singles (6-0, 6-1); Nick Mucch, third singles (6-0, 6-3); Joseph Tran and Pariwat Chaiwong, first doubles (6-3, 7-5); and Nick Tran and Soun Lee, second doubles (6-0, 6-2).St. John’s 3, Wellesley 2At Wellesley, a win in the tiebreaker of the second set of second doubles gave the Prep a victory over the defending state champions. Mike Beluch and Mark Corvi won 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) for the Eagles.Also winning for St. John’s (11-1, 6-0 Catholic Conference) were Chris Toner, third singles (6-2, 6-1); and John Corvi-Bradley Noyes, first doubles (6-0, 6-1).Arlington Catholic 4, Fenwick 1At Peabody, Joseph Dorezio and Alex Amero picked up the only point for the Crusaders, winning in doubles 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.
