MARBLEHEAD – A Marblehead man was charged with his second offense of driving drunk on Wednesday night, after he allegedly assaulted a woman in Beverly that he was having an affair with.Chad David Rutledge, 37, of 12 Hibbard Road, was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, second offense, and a domestic assault charge out of Beverly. He was arraigned Thursday on the alcohol charge at Lynn District Court by Judge Antoinette Leoney and released on personal recognizance. A pre-trial hearing has been scheduled for June 23.According to court documents, Marblehead Police saw Rutledge speeding on West Shore Drive around 10 p.m., and pulled him over on Village Street. The officer said he could smell an odor of alcohol on Rutledge as he asked him for his registration. Mumbling under his breath, Rutledge handed over a wad of napkins and a straw instead of his registration and then, on the second try, a cardboard light bulb container.Rutledge’s eyes were allegedly bloodshot and glassy and he refused to take a sobriety test when asked. At that point, Rutledge was arrested and taken to the station for booking and Beverly Police were notified that he was in their custody.According to a Beverly Police report, Rutledge allegedly assaulted a woman he was having an affair with at her home on Butman Street that night. The victim said she had broken off a six-month affair with Rutledge earlier that day and that he had tried numerous times to contact her. After she refused to respond, Rutledge allegedly went to her home and said that he had secretly recorded conversations that she had with him and threatened to play them for her husband. After asking him to leave, Rutledge allegedly grabbed the victim by her throat, slammed her against a wall, after which the two tumbled down a flight of stairs together. He then ran out of the house and drove away.Beverly Police sent out a “Be on the Lookout” for Rutledge, which led to his arrest in Marblehead.Rutledge’s cellular phone is in police custody.
